Here's our discussion for Airborn.  So what did you think?

When did the book first get your attention?

Amanda said...

For me it was when Kate and Miss Simpkins got on board.

Landee said...

I liked the old dude in the balloon thing. But then it got interesting AGAIN when they boarded as well.

Landee said...

So, Amanda, why did you pick this book if you hated it so?

Amanda said...

The old dude in the balloon thing kinda reminded me of the old dude on Up. Except not as cranky.

Amanda said...

No, I didn't hate it. I'm just extremely picky. There are very few books that I don't pick apart.

Amanda said...

Not that I could do any better....I'm just easily annoyed let's say.

Markie23 said...

The prelude captured my attention. The rest of the book disappointed.

Amanda said...

What did you think about all the tasks and duties that Matt had? Did it ever seem a bit convenient on the author's part?

Amanda said...

It seemed like Matt was in the middle of all the action because of his duties as ......what was he exactly on the Airship? I never did understand that. He seemed to be everywhere.

Markie23 said...

It was like a less than mediocre pirate book, that someone (author? publisher?) thought they could sell if instead of ships it was blimps.

Amanda said...

Markie, remind of the prelude. I don't even remember it.

Markie23 said...

Cabin boy?

StandsMom said...

Hi HI HI HI HI!!!!!!!!!!!

Markie23 said...

When they pull in the disable balloon with the dying man on board.

Amanda said...

Hi Stands Mom!
@Markie, oh yeah, now I remember.

StandsMom said...

Cabin boy, water boy - one of those guys on the cruise ship who works at the bar at night, carries peoples bags - and serves in the restaurants during the day.

Amanda said...

What did you guys think about the cloud cats?

StandsMom said...

We saw guys like that on our cruise last year. They called my husband Meester Brian.

Markie23 said...

dumb. Why make us something stupid like that in an otherwise quasi-historical fiction type novel?

Markie23 said...

Same with the mango gas. Dumb

StandsMom said...

I loved the idea of the cloud cats. I pictured them thinner than the picture Landee posted.

StandsMom said...

THe mango gas had to smell like mangos cause when he wrote the book the first time, there wasn't any way to tell if the gas leaking from the cave was of any use unless it could be easily identified.
????

Amanda said...

@ Stands Mom... That's funny.
When I read all the descriptions of the invisible beautiful birds I was shocked that they named them cloud cats. Was anyone else surprised by that name for them?

StandsMom said...

LOL!

Markie23 said...

I like made up creatures... like wookies, or elf's, in a sci-fi or fantasy adventure book. This just seemed again, like a hook to try and sell an otherwise hackneyed story.

StandsMom said...

I figured as much as Kate obsessed over them, she would have figured out a name for the already.

Amanda said...

I thought that last picture Landee posted of a cloud cat was hilarious.

Landee said...

This was a book you just had to suspend all knowledge of reality and go with it.

I actually really liked the suave pirate captain.

Markie23 said...

LOVE the Kate/Voldemort connection!

StandsMom said...

I did too. He was so hateable and yet, had a little boy. Awwww.....but such a pig. Cold cold heartless pirate man.

Amanda said...

Did it bother you guys that Kate was so curious and determined and stubborn that she was willing to risk everyone's safety in search of the cloud cat?

Landee said...

I was calling the cloud cats "nimbus felines" but whatevs.

StandsMom said...

Kate sort of bugged that way. Like, immature, but I guess a girl that age wouldn't have been very practical, right?

Amanda said...

I liked the mean, kinda sexy pirate captain too!

Landee said...

Jenny is on her way home from some dumb church meeting and will be here shortly.

PS Osama is dead. is that better or worse news than that there was hydrium on the island!

Markie23 said...

I thought it was dumb that Kate was so doggedly determined to not share the discovery with anyone. She seemed selfish or paranoid, or idunnowhat.

Amanda said...

What did you guys think of that one kid that took his position that got shot at the end....forgot his name...what did you think about him pulling rank on Matt that one time? I thought was out of character and totally lame.

Markie23 said...

I was watching Apprentice and am ticked that they interrupted my show with the news.

Markie23 said...

Obama just wants to get his mug on TV again.

Landee said...

I agree. That was a weird thing for that kid to do. He was all humble and then bam...pulling rank. I didn't cry when we found him dead.

Markie23 said...

(appologies to any Obama fans out there)

Amanda said...

Glad Jenny's on her way.
Yes, I heard that. Took long enough.

Amanda said...

Ouch @ the Obama dig.

StandsMom said...

I think it's too bad that the dude who took Cruse's job had to be a red-shirt guy, but who else is gonna take one for the team?

Amanda said...

Did you guys know there's another book after this one? I've heard that it's even better. No cloud cats thank goodness. Will you read it? Yes or no. I'm a no because I don't have time. I only read fiction for this book club.

Landee said...

Was anyone else bugged by all the coincidences? Toooooo convenient sometimes.

StandsMom said...

Is it terrible that I can't watch the president speaking without thinking about how good they portray him on SNL?

Landee said...

I heard there is two more....the 2nd one so-so the 3rd one fantastic.

I'll be reading.

StandsMom said...

I decided to start Memoir's of a Geisha. Not bad so far.

Amanda said...

Yes, I was very bugged by all the conveniences. I think that was my biggest hurdle with this book.

Markie23 said...

I was bugged by how simplistic the storyline was. The storytelling was so... i don't know... linear.

Amanda said...

If we did book 2 for book club I would read it.

Landee said...

Memoirs of a Geisha made me gag when she talked about her "dark spot"

Amanda said...

Markie, you liked The Maze Runner, correct but didn't like Mocking Jay or the Book Thief. I am still trying to figure you out.

Markie23 said...

I did like that the cloud cats at least weren't cute and cuddly. I would have like to have seen Kate get some serious scratches and bites.

Amanda said...

dark spot...woah.

Speaking of dark spot did you hear that Lisa See has a new novel out? I read that in the Costco Connection.

Markie23 said...

Ugh. Don't mention The Book Thief!

StandsMom said...

Haven't gotten to the dark spot yet.

Landee said...

Markie is an enigma. The more you try to figure him out the more confused you will be. I stopped trying long ago.

Markie23 said...

The Maze Runner wasn't great, but much better than Airborn.

Amanda said...

Lol. The other day someone recommended the Book Thief to my mom and I literally screamed NO! That is the exact opposite kind of book my mom likes to read. She loves Jack Weyland and Anita Stansfield novels if you catch my drift.

Markie23 said...

:o)

Amanda said...

Cool. I'm an enigma too so we have something in common.

Amanda said...

Well is there anything else we should discuss or should we wrap it up?

Markie23 said...

Not a lot to discuss with this one. I'm good.

StandsMom said...

What's next?

StandsMom said...

To read.

Markie23 said...

I think Jespy is looking for a volunteer.

Amanda said...

Okay, I guess that's it for the discussion. Have a good night everyone. Thanks for being here.

Landee said...

G'night.

Landee, light as air.

StandsMom said...

See ya!!

Markie23 said...

Thanks Amanda... may your gas smell of mangoes.

Markie23 said...

Oh, and a happy late birthday to you Landee!
