anyone here yet?
Ya know, I'm missing Chuck for this.
Reading all these johnny-come-lately reviews!! BRB
I'm here! Was reading the last few reviews, now I'm ready.
so i looked up some "book club questions"...but they were all lame. and we all apparently LOVED the book, so what's to discuss??
I loved reading everyone's reviews. Such a delightful book.Deeeeee Light Full
Let's discuss how to become more like Juliet. Is it a character trait or can I take a class?
Well... maybe WHY we loved the book?
Hey, sorry I didn't get a review in, but I LOVED this book! There. Review done.
I know Jen asked if having two authors helped with making "individual voices" for the letters. But, according to everything I read about the book, MaryAnn Shaffer wrote most of it, and only called her niece when she was diagnosed with cancer. She helped her finish it and get it ready to publish.
brb, i've gotta go read last come reviews
K, so I have a question. Why do you think she made Sydney "happy" and why did she wait so long to tell us, although she left many hints?
I got such a kick out of Adelaide's letters. She was somethin' else.
Holy Cow! Cristin really did have this book in the running and chose Diplomat's wife? THIS needs to be discussed.
I have my own theories.
It's the little stories about war time that really let you know how life was.
I was entirely caught off guard by the gay thing. And then did one of those, "Oh!!! Okay." things after I'd reconsidered the details.
I think Juliet's personality is a character trait...so I'm not sure how to cultivate that, but I loved her.
I want to know exactly how much her niece wrote though. Was is just a bit of tweaking then?
They made Sidney gay as a tangerine to crush our hearts and put him out of the running. If she ended up with boring Dawsey at the end when Sidney was still out there hetero we woulda been pizzed.
If i hadn't borrowed this book I would have written "Sydney's happy" on the side of page 83.
I did write that. But solidgold has my book so I can't prove it.
Charight amy. You had high hopes for him and Juliet like the rest of us, GLAPPS included.
I think making Sidney gay was nice plot twist. I was really wondering why they hadn't gotten together, it was obvious they were crazy about each other.Just not in "that" way apparently.
So I think she made him gay for a reason. And sprung it on us for a reason.
I just figured their relationship was too brother/sister-like, since she sort of grew up around him and Sophie.
Juliet is so lucky to have a gay BFF. Another reason to envy her.
And I didn't think Dawsey was boring, I think he was sweet.
I never felt like Juliet and Sydney would ever be together. They seemed more brother sisterish.
And welcome Solid Gold!! I loved your review.
I need to go back and re-read his letters about CHarles Lamb because at the end he was quiet and brooding <--- lamerz.
But close friends can still fall in love. His gayness was a devastating blow, imo. Dawsey wasn't even on my radar.
I'll say it again...I've asked for a gay BFF every year for christmas.
Yeah...cause he was all in love and nervous and stuff. So sweet.
Where is SolidGold anyway? I hope she knows how to refresh....
Maybe Sidney coulda hit both ways tho.
Yes, welcome welocome to Solid gold! I've been admiring your profile pic for ages! Did you bring the pig?
I had several gay friends. Unfortunately, I'm down to one. Three died of AIDS, one disowned me when he heard I was supporting Prop 8, one died of an epileptic siezure while cruising down the Nile with his Dad. So now I have one, non-practicing, LDS bookstore owning gay friend left.
Markie here. Couldn't tear myself away from a great Jazz game.
Yeah, I didn't write about Dawsey on any of my margins.
I like my men assertive. What, would Dawsey have just NEVER said anything? What the?
Shel you are so lucky!!
Debbie downer shel!!!! We want only happy gay bff stories.
yeah but YOU made the first move on Gty did you not?
Srsly! Waaaa waaaaa...::glad I have no gay BFFs now if that's how it ends up::
I have a gay friend of the female variety. Cool huh?
My fondness for this book tripled when I read Markie's review and discovered that he had to hold back his emotions in public. Perfect.
Um, the female variety are NOT the same Markie, imho.
No. H-er tried to make me make the first move. I did not oblige. Plus he was still dating that girl with the lazy eye so...
My roomate at BYU was a lesbo.
Markie: as Sam would say "any touchdowns yet?"Sam and I read an essay by Charles Lamb today, ironically about the wonders of roast pig. We found it very entertaining, though not for the faint of heart. If any of you want the link, I'll pass it on.
But didn't the fact that someone as clever and assertive and awesome as Juliet make you think that maybe she knew something you didn't when it came to Dawsey? I just had to trust her on that one. But yeah. No where on my radar was he.
In fact, I pictured Dawsey as being an old gray haired man through most of the book.
I totally agree Jespy.
My son finally got off the computer, so Hi.I checked page 83 Landee. Hmmmm. I think that Sidney secretly liked Juliet, and was actually on of those Bi's. But he didn't want to ruin their relationship so stuck with the fully gay story. That's my own theory.
Yes, i was on the bus all like... "They must not see me cry".
I totally thought Dawsey was an old man!!
I pictured Dawsey as a Phylip Seymour Hoffman kinda guy.
What did you all think of how naturally she ended up connected with Elizabeth's little girl? I mean, even very shortly after arriving on the island they were staying together.
You better put up the link for good measure, shel.
Maybe after Mark Reynolds and the trophy guy trying to run her life, she wanted some low-key who just liked her the way she was.
See? SolidGold totally supports my bi theory.
Yeah, I thought the kit angle was a little weird. That she would just take over raising E's kid out of no where.
Kit imprinted on Juliet.
I pictured Dawsey as Tommy Lee Jones.
I don't know. They seemed a little too lax about leaving her with someone they hardly knew. Hey Andrea!!!
Gay is a spectrum you gize!!!! They probably hooked up at some point. Guarantee they went to prom or something.
Spin the bottle at a dumb party, for sure.
I thought Kit was a brat but I forgave her cuz I pictured her uncute. Plus her mom was deaderz and stuff.
Or Morp Jenny. That happened to me once. Went to Morp with a gay.
Landee, I don't know how to refresh.
No way. Kit didn't even like her at first, Amy. Remember? weirdness.
You're supposed to go to MORP with a gay guy. PROM with a hetero. Doyee!
(it's been a couple of months since I read the book but...)Didn't she NOT want to deal with a kid at first? And I was thinking that at first, Kit was just visiting her...kind of going between Juliet and that other lady whose name escapes me. I think the kid just grew on her. Sometimes they do that...
I perceived a connection between J & D after their first couple letters. She did hook him up more Lamb... and the way to a man's heart is through his literary stomach. lamb... stomach... yeah... sorry.
Dangit Andrea! I knew I should have been at your house for your first meeting. YOu're going to miss all my little comments I'm making about you.
Lollerz @ amy. Almost forgot.
Can we talk about Isola for a bit? I wanna have one of those too.
Can you imagine having to have a book store owner find a book for you and order it? Thank goodness for Amazon.
I feel like I'm in a time warp. Hey Ann!
I noticed things about J and D after the fact, yes. But I was too distracted by buff and tan Sydney to get the clue right away.
Kindle app rocks
I only threw out imprinting to get the whole Twilight reference out of the way. It has to happen at every book club.
We LOVED Isola. She was our favorite character. She kind of reminded me of my Granma Fuller...she was into phrenology and reflexology...was gonna cure my allergies by rubbing my feet. Unfortunately, I'm EXTREMELY ticklish..she didn't get far...
And thank goodness they didn't make Kit a cute kid. I hate that! Cuz we all now some kids are uncute. Just a fact.
One of my most meaningful ((??)) relationships in HS was with a guy who is now full gay. What's up with that?
I wish they would make a movie out of this book bc I'd love to see who would get to play Isola. I loved her!
I tried to search for a look a like picture for Isola.
I'm picturing Isola played by Meryl Streep.
I love all of these people but I guarantee all their teeth were horrendous. Starting with that old man, Dawsey.
"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2011) More at IMDbPro »In Development OverviewNote: Because this project is categorized as in development, the data is only available on IMDbPro and is subject to change."
See, I didn't like Isola right away. She was just a weirdo. But she grew on me in a big way eventually.
Juliet would be Jennifer Garner
Yeah, one of my gay friends was dating my best friend when we were in HS, we doubled all the time. She was pretty floored when we found out in college that he was gay.
Ew, Memzy! No
A great Isola look alike would be close to the picture that Ann put on her blog with the one big roaming eye--but a bit crazier.
One of my favorite letters was the lady who wrote to Juliet and told her she wasn't attractive? Who was that? It wasn't Isola, was it?
Amy Adams. With a british accent. And dyed hair.
Elizabeth would be played by Keira Knightley.
Isola would be cloris leachman
I loved Isola and her motorcycle with a sidecar.
hahahahahahahah! Cloris leachmanhahahahahahahah
Good call Landee. I like Amy Adams better.
Memzy, stop now. Gross.
yes, memz. So she could die right?
Hence the ugly kid right?
Shirley MacLaine would be a great Isola if she wasn't so old these days... I loved her Weezer in Steel Magnolias.
I do like Meryl Streep. But with a prosthetic nose & crazy wig.
Watch it Memzy!
Elizabeth played by Kate Winslet.
Well of course. I mean Meryl can UG it up
I don't like Amy Adams anymore. She always acts the same and it's getting old. I hated her in julie and julia.
Cloris with a wonky eye.
What about Sidney tho? Who should play him?Gerard Butler!!!
Cloris leachman's even older than Shirley MacLaine.
K.N. would be a great Juliet.
And Kit played by some pudgy little bratty kid. Who knows how to sneer real good.
Jude Law as Sidney.
nicole kidman as elizabeth.
Me as Sophie (duh).
I thought of that too. But could she pull of the ugly factor?
OOOOooo good landee.
Am I the only one who pictured Kit as uber cute? Did someone say she wasn't cute in the book... don't remember that part.
Eh on Nicole Kidman. Dunno about that one.
Sam says Nicole Kidman as Elizabeth. But, he's a bigger NK fan than I am...
That's true. Gerard couldn't pull off gay.....ever.
I think her personality was lacking so I just imagined her as these bratty ugly kids you see running around the wardhouse on any given sunday.
Mary Stuart Masterson as Sydney
Ward house? Srsly?
No gay guy would have a droopy lip, Memz. THat's reserved for tough guys like Sly Stallone.
Colin Firth as Dawsey
Sydney and Juliet:http://cm1.theinsider.com/media/0/135/99/pushing_daisies.0.0.0x0.384x512.jpeg
Chaz Bono as Sidney.
Ewan McGregor as Mark Reynolds.
I just adore Colin Firth. Love him.
Ah, Michelle, now I love Dawsey.
Clooney as Mark Reynolds
Memzy--me no likey your ugly crush guy.
He's always playing a male chauvinist pig-type
FHS YOU GIZE!! It's SIdney. Not Sydney. You're gonna drive me to drugs here. My subtle hints are not working.
We like Ewan better as Mark Reynolds....good call Memz...
It's ok Jespy. More for me.
Landee--lollerz @ chazShel--nailed it
I guess I got on an Alias kick.
What were some of the dumb quetions the web told us to ask, Shel?
Good call Jenny. I miss that show btw.
Dana Carvey as Adelaide Addison.
L you're such a passive aggressive grammar police. I love ignoring your non-subtle hints.
Mike Myers would be good too.
Yes, lets here the bad qwestions.
Shel's got this whole cast down!
It's too bad Flem isn't here cuz she'd lollerz at Landee being the grammar police.
Joan Cusack could definitely be someone.
Jespy you're going to drive Landee to Drugs.
Joan as Isola. Perf!!
What were the pros and cons of the book being written as a series of letters?
Maybe SYYYYDney didn't really break his leg and he was just on a vacay with his 'partner'
Where is flem? and all the other missing people for that matter. I know lots of people read this one.
Ok. Next lame question...
I think the main reason i didn't like the questions, is that everyone already addressed most of them in their reviews.
I'll text Flem. brb
Joan Cusack would be a great Isola...she's kind of quirky.
Pros- You got to feel like you were snooping into someones life.Con's- It took longer to tell you the story. Kinda like on Dateline when they take an hour to tell a 15 minute story.
I like Dateline BTW
Yes, it clicked later on, Stands. When Sydnei was being "nursed" back to health by "Piers". Winks!!
I bet Peeerce was hawt.
It's like you're mouths are moving but I can't hear what you're saying.
Did you want Juliet to end up with Sidney, Mark Reynolds or Dawsey? Did you suspect why a romantic relationship with Sidney was not possible?
Text back from Flem: Craaaaap.
Wait, I thought the letter thing sped the story WAY WAY WAY up times ten.
Matt Damon could be Reynolds.
No! I don't mean Matt Damon. Hang on....
How could those letters have possibly gotten to and from Marc and Juliette so fast?
I was waiting for them to introduce a character for her, not knowing they already had...
We would have had to hear Juliet's whole thought process and her actions and stuff, instead of just getting a piece of it here and there.
Matt Dillon. Yeeesh! Sorry.
Then Flem said: Driving. Tell them I said 5 stars and thanks a gazillions.
No Jespy, cuz you had to read all their small talk.
Like "dear..." and "Sincerely..."
I liked the letters because they gave you more of an insight in how different characters thought and what motivated them. I thought she (or they) did an ingenious job of making each character's letter "voice" so different.
Oh yeah, back to the gay sydney thing... I think he ended up gay so we would think about the people who were killed by the Nazis for being gay. Cuz we think about the Jews a lot, but the gay folk are sometimes forgotten cuz their numbers weren't as big.
I think the stuff between Mark and Juliet was probably done with couriers...they did that alot then. Not the regular mail... Some kid on a bike.
I liked the letters. I was just trying to answer a question. I like having it be in so many different first persons.
There is way more small talk in daily life than what is written in letters. In fact I didn't see any small talk. Everything was written for a reason, imp.
I loved the letters. I'm currently writing a novel entirely through email. It's exhilarating.
Next lame question...although this one isn't so lame...If you had lived on Guernsey just before the occupation, do you think you would have sent your children to England without you?
I would have left WITH them. Dorky Duh.
I hope some really crappy books get picked before it comes around to my turn again. I don't think I can handle this kind of pressure.
So, I think they sprung the gay thing on us so we wouldn't form any prejudices about him ahead of time. The reason I though all this was bc right when I found out he was gay, first I mourned, and then I was concerned for his fragile existence in those turbulent times. He could have been killed.
I stopped at one point in the book and had that discush with Sherod. I don't know what I would do with my kids! Keep them is my first instinct but....?
I wouldn't have needed an excuse to send the kids away.
I'm glad they made him gay during the book and not as an after thought at a book signing.
