The Queen

I didn't want to have to play this card, but Standsmom pushed me into it ok?

I give you, The Queen of Attolia!

Don't try to deny it Jespy, you know it's true.

Sorry. This is entirely a delayed response to the leading man post. Viggo is really appropriate for parts like some of the dudes in these books. I can't figure which part tho, any suggestions? He's too old for Gen and not yummy or clever enough.

Also couldn't have been a good Gen, but one of the other soldiers. Cotis, perhaps? No. Not skinny enough for Cotis. Teleus, maybe. Or...Yes! Sophos!

Quite appropriate for Gen, I think. Can't you see this guy lounging in a chair, dressed like a King, pretending not to care? Strapped to a chair watching the knife fall? Swordfighting with the soldiers? Running through the trees at night. Dirty? Skinny? Beat up? Hiding earrings in the queens bedroom? Washing himself outside an Inn with cold water, scrubbing the ground-in dirt off his body? Winking at the barmaid for a tie for his hair? Smashing ink wells against the wall? See the twinkly is his eye? "Yes, my Queen." :::swoooooooon!:::

No Pressure

As of today, Monday April 20th, you should have read 670 pages. I believe that means you should be finishing up The Queen of Attolia in the next day or two. Our discussion is a week from Sunday.

For "grade-level" books there sure are a lot of words I never heard before. Here are a few I had to look up on Dictionary.com

Magus
–noun, plural
1. One of the Magi.
2. A magician, sorcerer, or astrologer.
3. A Zoroastrian priest.

Megaron
–noun, plural
A building or semi-independent unit of a building, generally used as a living apartment and typically having a square or broadly rectangular principal chamber with a porch, often of columns in antis, and sometimes an antichamber or other small compartments.

Dystopia
–noun
A society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.

And here are what the Japanese think that Gen and Attolia look like:

Progress Report

So... how's it comin'? By my calculations you should have read 402 pages by now (Apr 12). If you are 122 pages into The Queen of Attolia then you are right on schedule. If you are farther ahead, give yourself a pat on the back! If you are like me, and just finished The Thief you are 122 pages behind, and need to pick up the pace.

I also want to welcome Brooke and Jill to our book club (see comments on the last post).

Finally, as I read the thief I had a clear picture in my mind of who the thief was, and it was this guy:

Dominic Monaghan

But I could also see this guy in the role:

Johnny Depp

or this guy:

Unknown Actor

Did you have a specific actor in mind? Who?

SRBC PICK FOR APRIL...

And the winner is:

THE QUEENS THIEF SERIES by Megan Whalen Turner
  • The Thief
  • The Queen of Attolia
  • The King of Attolia

This was the clear winner even if didn't count the votes that came in from some people I've never heard of, and who have never participated in the book club before (not that you aren't welcome to join us, but please... introduce yourself and let us know how you found your way to our little club).

It's going to take a great deal of effort to read all three books before the end of the month. We will have our meeting on Sunday May 3rd. The previous Sunday many of the book club members will be at a family gathering in Idaho. That means that, including today and May 3rd, we have 33 days to read a total of 1,104 pages. That works out to almost 33.5 pages per day!

Don't panic... they aren't BIG pages, and they are written at a grade school reading level so I don't think it'll be as hard as it sounds. But... Don't delay! Start reading as soon as possible. I'm no Queso (hard act to follow), but I'll try my best to encourage you along the way.

If you can only manage to read one or two of the books then at least do that. If necessary we will divide the reviews and discussions so that anyone wishing to avoid spoilers can still participate in discussions for the book(s) they read. Good Luck, and happy reading!!
