The official Discush: CITY OF BONES (and my review)

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I thought it was Twilight meets Harry Potter-ish. I won't give any major "spoilers" away on the next two books but you may just wanna go ahead and read them. Cuz it's sorta like eating a bite of hot fudge brownie sundae............and not swallowing it. You'll never really be satisfied.

Things I loved:
1.Simon. You've gotta love a smart-a** nerdy guy. How can you not?
2. Tattoos that are considered signs of honor and look pretty. I mean,...you know,....I might....
3. The idea that there are other dimensions around us. I KNEW there was a reason why messes in my house just appear out of nowhere. Somebody is using the playroom as a portal.
4. Jace and Clary. Enough said. The sexual tension there even rivals the one between Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney sweep. It's powerful stuff.
5. Two words: Magnus. Bane. There's no way you can't love an effeminate warlock.

Things I didn't like:
1. The characters were sometimes semi-retarded.
2. Clary's mom never TOLD her? I'd be pizzzzed.
3. Hodge turning out to be a total jagbag. Wha? I hearted him......past tense.

I'm sure there is more but I thought I should ask you these questions to get the partay started:

1. Why do you think Isabelle is such a B all the time? (and yet we like her don't we)

2. How does this book compare to the imaginary world of Harry Potter in your opinion?

3. Would you recommend this book/series to a friend?

Hey where is everybody.

Jenny ESP said...

I just posted my review, and I still need to read the other ones, so I'll be right back...

Markie23 said...

I loved Isabelle. And then I loved her even more when I considered Summer Glau playing her in the movie.

Markie23 said...

Hi Sammy!! Hi Jespy!!

StandsMom said...

Hey-ho!

Markie23 said...

Hi Mother of Stand!! Luved the review.

StandsMom said...

Gosh, thanks. I really liked yours too. :::grin:::

Hot Pants said...

Is this the "official review" place.

Markie23 said...

As for Harry Potter comparisons, there are too many to mention. I loved both series.

Markie23 said...

yes, would definitely recommend to a friend.

Markie23 said...

Still looking for Jespy and Hot Pants reviews.

Markie23 said...

Oh, I see Jespy's and Memzy's now.

Jenny ESP said...

k, read all your lovely reviews. I wish stand had gotten to read the book in her own internal voice...

Jenny ESP said...

I loved Isabelle. I was looking for her and Simon to hook up, but I won't say anything about what happens in book 3...

Jenny ESP said...

This had a bunch of similarities to Harry Potter, but condensed and starting at an older age. Also, Harry Potter was always missing a good romance story. Clary and Jace got intense there, brother and sister or not...

Markie23 said...

So you'd pick Isabelle over Maia for Simon Jenny? - reasons?

Hot Pants said...

I'm trying to sneak and do this while we are celebrating Howies b-day. I'll be in and out

Jenny ESP said...

Was anyone else thinking about kissing your brother (or sister) and barfing? I was dying for her to hurry up and find out he wasn't really her brother, gag.

Markie23 said...

Have you ever SEEN demon blood Jenny? Maybe it really IS black.

samandlysander said...

I was routing for Isabelle and Simon too. I didn't really care for Maia.

Jenny ESP said...

I did not like Maia. At all. She seemed like an old shoe to me. I would pick Isabelle over her for Simon.

Cristin said...

lalala I'm not listening. I'm having to cover my eyes in case someone gives something away. I'm still reading the first book but I heart it already. Jace is hot!!! That's all that matters. I'll have to read all the reviews once I'm done reading. Sorry I failed you guys!! I'm so going to keep up next month!!!

Jenny ESP said...

All the blood was black, not just demon blood, human blood too. It was never red. The term black blood got old.

Markie23 said...

I just think Isabelle was way too hot for nerdy Simon. And since he's Simon and Maia are both Downworlders it seems like a better match.

Jenny ESP said...

No prob, Cristin. I suspect you will love it!

StandsMom said...

Srsly? Am I the only one with Luke on my radar?

Markie23 said...

I wonder if black blood tastes different from red blood when you bite your lip.

Jenny ESP said...

That's what was cool about it, Markie. How miss-matched they were. Maia was damaged goods. She seemed clingy and desperate.

Markie23 said...

I plan to steal a stele made of steel.

Jenny ESP said...

Luke was cool, but he was too old for me. Verging on elderly. You might like Simon if you keep reading. Mostly, after the last book. He became srsly desirable.

samandlysander said...

Maia was pretty lame. Besides they said Simon got hotter when he turned into a vampire and Isabelle had a thing for downworlders. I'd say they were a perfect match.

StandsMom said...

Oh! You know one scene I loved was when the weird tarot card lady turned into the gooey dementor thingy.

Markie23 said...

I finished the third book in about 4 days - hard to put down.

Jenny ESP said...

Was anyone creeped out by Jace and Clary's desire to continue their romance, regardless of being bro and sis?

Jenny ESP said...

Ooooo, you know what was my favorite part..

samandlysander said...

I thought it was pretty predictable that they were going to end up finding out they weren't related. Valentine seemed pretty manipulative like that.

Markie23 said...

I figured they must have known deep inside what was obvious to us readers - that they were not really related.

Memzy said...

Coming atcha from Loserville. Had some issues with my three hooligans. I'm now off to read the reviews quick like and I'll be back.

Jenny ESP said...

Just the fact that they were WILLING to go there, tho...

Markie23 said...

EXPECTO PATRONUM!

StandsMom said...

Gross!

samandlysander said...

I was never creeped out by it because I knew it couldn't be true.

Markie23 said...

Anybody watch Ugly Betty? You know Willamina's assistant Mark?... Magnus Bane.

samandlysander said...

I loved Magnus Bane he cracked me up.

Jenny ESP said...

So my favorite part was when Jace and clary madeout, of course, and then when he took Clary back to her room, and Simon came out all jealous and said "you invited him to bed?" and Jace goes, "Ridiculous, isn't it? We wouldn't have all fit." That made me spontaneously lol. Yeah, some of the dialog was clever.

Markie23 said...

Yeah, I had a great voice in my head for Magnus.

Memzy said...

Simon + Isabelle = a new series for CC.

Jenny ESP said...

OMG, Mark, you nailed it! Magnus is Mark from ugly betty. Love him. So adorable.

Memzy said...

Jace WAS very clever with his dialogue. I kept wishing I could be that witty on the spot.

Memzy said...

ps. Mark thanks for the web links. That is awesome!@!

Jenny ESP said...

I think she needs to write a spin off book for Simon.

Memzy said...

Gerard Butler-mmmmmmmmmm

Markie23 said...

I agree Memzy. I'm disappointed that she is going back 150 years or so, instead of continuing on with current characters.

Jenny ESP said...

What is the new series she's writing about? Anybody know?

samandlysander said...

She said on her website she was going to write a book in Simons perspective after the Infernal Devices Series is over.

Hot Pants said...

ok, I'm back. Did anyone else picture Jeny and Tom kissing and then finding out they are brother and sister?

samandlysander said...

The new series is about a downworlder 150 years before mortal instruments. Its supposed to have Magnus Bane in it though.

Memzy said...

And I lurrrrrve the pics for all the other actors. The only one that doesn't fit for me is Brad Pitt as Valentine.

Hot Pants said...

Dammit! I just read comments and heard they aren't really brother and sister. Jenny, I will now have to change the image of Tom, back to Tony.

Markie23 said...

http://www.theinfernaldevices.com/

Jenny ESP said...

Amy, you are sick and twisted, indeed.

I don't want to wait that long for Simon's book. I love olden time stories tho. Might be good. Let's see, what was happening in the world 150 years ago...

samandlysander said...

Ughh, I hated Cris Angel for Magnus.

Hot Pants said...

did you all read all 3 books?

Hot Pants said...

I only have 12 minutes of battery life on my laptop. Yes, you heard me, I got a lap top. Dwight got a new one and let me have his old one. He treats me well.....

Jenny ESP said...

Amy, did you read the book?

Markie23 said...

If Stephenie Meyer had written this series Jace, Clary, Valentine, Sebastian, Simon and the vampires, Luke and the werewolves, the faires, and the demon hordes would have sat down and talked it all out over tea.

Memzy said...

I think CC has an obsession with blood. She often talks about it in sheets, curtains, walls, coats,.....of blood. Am I right?

Markie23 said...

Who woulda thought there were gays in England 150 years ago.

Jenny ESP said...

Yes, I agree Mark, The action in this book was a million times better. There were a lot of things better with this book. As far as the things that were wrong with it... did anyone think there was TONS of obvious info dump going on? It was like she needed to squeeze all this stuff into three books.

Hot Pants said...

I got to where after their meeting in the City of Bones, Clary and Jace decide to head to a cafe and meet Alec, Isabelle and Simon for breakfast. I don't know if you are aware of this, but I am moving tomorrow and have been a little busy.

samandlysander said...

I never realized there was so much talk of blood in the series. Guess the whole black blood thing didn't phase me.

Jenny ESP said...

There was an extraordinary amount of blood too, I thought. By the end, I was thinking "more blood? geez"

Hot Pants said...

Have you never heard of Sodam and Gamora?

Markie23 said...

There really was a lot of blood... black blood, metallic tasting blood in your mouth, bubbles of thick blood gurgling up your throat... good stuff.

Jenny ESP said...

++spoiler++

Oh, I also liked the twist with Simon's cellmate in book three.

Hot Pants said...

That was BC, and there were gays...

samandlysander said...

I think she could have slowed the story up a bit and written another book.

Memzy said...

It was offputting after awhile. I like the action but the blood was just tooooo much.

Hot Pants said...

I hardly noticed...

Memzy said...

I still don't like Hodge. He didn't redeem himself enough for me.

Hot Pants said...

I'm dead inside though.

Jenny ESP said...

By the end of series, you might notice that were was quite a bit of blood. The whole thing was a bloody blood bath

Jenny ESP said...

There was something I was going to bring up and I forgot what it was...

Memzy said...

A bloody shower of blood waterfall.

Markie23 said...

**Spoiler**

Speaking of blood. How about when Valentine got a big hole in his chest that Clary could look through and see the lake and the "fiery glow of the angel beyond". I bet Quintin Tarantino would love to direct that scene.

samandlysander said...

I gotta go watch the MTV movie awards. They're gonna show the preview to New Moon.

Hot Pants said...

When you gize put up a +++ to announce a spoiler, it just makes me want to read it even more.

Jenny ESP said...

OH YEAH, this is major, you gize, if you're still here. Did anyone notice how RIGHT before someone could explain something important, they would be interrupted by the most ridiculous scenario? It was CONSTANT throughout book three. Almost laughable.

Jenny ESP said...

New moon????

Hot Pants said...

I have 2 minutes remaining on my laptop. Yeah, you heard me right, I got a laptop. I guess I could get up and plug it in...

Markie23 said...

Love you Sammy. Hope you had a good weekend. I'll call ya tomorrow.

samandlysander said...

I know I almost could predict what the Inquisitor was gonna say before she went.

samandlysander said...

Yep New Moon the first preview. I don't wanna miss this.

Markie23 said...

We're going to Disneyland a week from tomorrow you gize!!! EEEEEEK!!

samandlysander said...

Talk to you later gize. Thanks for the amazing book pick Memzy.

Jenny ESP said...

It was good to see you in here tonight, Sam! Glad you loved the books too.

Jenny ESP said...

Mark, you lucky dog. I have an exciting vacay coming up too...

Memzy said...

You are so welcome. I'm glad people liked it.

Jenny ESP said...

I was about to tell you where we're going, but I was interrupted with the urge to pee, so now you will never know.

Memzy said...

What's your exciting vacay coming up Jespy?

Jenny ESP said...

Thanks for hosting, Memz. I loved your choice too.

Jenny ESP said...

I have many exciting vacays coming up, and what they are is--oh, wait, hang on, I'm being interrupted...

Hot Pants said...

We might go to Disneyland in September....EEEEEKKK!

Hot Pants said...

Memzy was an amazing hostess. I'm a little nervous for my own performance.

Hot Pants said...

I just set my tivo to record MTV awards. Thanks for the heads up Sam

Hot Pants said...

Is it just me by myself now? I just plugged in my laptop. Yeah, that's right, I got an old/new to me laptop.

Memzy said...

If you go to Disneyland in Sept, Hot Pants you'd better stop by here too right?

Memzy said...

Hey Amy. Did you get a LAPTOP?!!

Hot Pants said...

In case you were wondering, from what I have read so far, I am loving the book. And as soon as all of my possessions are moved from one house to another, I am going to finish this book. Even with all your spoilers.

Hot Pants said...

Dwight wants to run the 1/2 marathon at Disneyland in Septemberish. We will def stop by, or you could also join us for the fun.

Hot Pants said...

These new laptop inventions are amazing. I can sit here in my comfy recliner and check email, blogs, facebook, spider solitaire, watch a movie, all with a single warm booklike keyboard sitting on my lap.

Markie23 said...

Our discussions seem to have gotten slower and slower over the years. I remember the days when we'd fill a page with comments in like 10 minutes. What has happened SRBC? Is the love gone?

Hot Pants said...

We've lost that lovin' feelin', whoa that lovin' feelin'

Memzy said...

Sometimes you just can't recreate the magic that WAS Breaking Dawn. Plus we are missing some people (Flem, Landee, etc)

Markie23 said...

So what message should we leave for Landee for when she comes back some day to read all the comments she missed 'cause she didn't read the books?

Markie23 said...

And where's Katie and Katie 2.0, and Sara, and all the rest?

Memzy said...

Yeah, the more people the better

Hot Pants said...

Katie's computer died. Maybe that has affected her ability to participate.

Markie23 said...

Alright... I'm outta here. Can't wait to find out what we're readin' next. Is that you Amy?

StandsMom said...

I just got a new macbook!! Since we're sharing. I'm not going to Disneyland anytime soon tho. Landee definitely needs some spoiler warnings. Tons of talk about the second and third books.

Markie23 said...

Is it your turn to pick I mean?

Hot Pants said...

Maybe the other people are super busy cuz they are getting ready to move? That's a crazy time. It would take a really dedicated and amazing person to still be loyal to a book club during a time like that.

Memzy said...

Looks like we are winding down. Glad everyone enjoyed. Can't wait to see what's next!!

cya

Hot Pants said...

Yeah, I'm next month. Still debating which direction to take it.

Hot Pants said...

Looks like mine is a Gateway.

Markie23 said...

Don't debate too long. I need some fresh reading material in my "library". Good luck with your move!

Markie23 said...

Markie out.
