Discussion

Welcome to our book club discussion for April. Thank you Jenny for allowing me to be in charge last month. It was fun. I will start things off tonight with a question:

Did the author's disclaimer that nothing in the book was historically accurate - the empires of Eddis, Attolia, Sounis, Mede, and the Greek Gods were all made up - lower your opinion of her or her story in any way?

Hello?

Jenny ESP said...

echo echo echo

Landee said...

Whazzzup y'all?

Katie 2.0 said...

Just U & me Jenny. Awkward.

Cristin said...

hey hey hey I'm heeeeeeeeeeeeeere

Katie 2.0 said...

Nevermind. Not so awkward.

Jenny ESP said...

Ah, Katie 2.0. You threw me for a minute there.

Katie 2.0 said...

Just awkward that I'm the only one here who isn't a cousin. I apologize for that.

Cristin said...

so who feels bad that markie and sammy couldn't see the light???

Jenny ESP said...

To answer Markie's question: No.

Jenny ESP said...

Only Cristin and I are cousins, don't feel awkward.

And what is up with Mark not feeling this book? I thought it would be right up his book alley.

StandsMom said...

I'm not a cousin either. I didn't care if it was accurate. It's a fictional book. Why should it be? That's the joy of fiction. You can do whatever you want.

Markie23 said...

Markie's here, but a little annoyed that Sammy and Jespy decided to post their review a second after I published this comment thing so that it dropped down below their reviews. For a little while I couldn't figure out why it didn't publish, and then I realized it was down below.

Cristin said...

Jenny, do you really think the books are up there with Hunger GAmes??? really?? I mean I like them but totally different league...not nearly as interesting in my opinion.

Hot Pants said...

I, a tiny bit, agree with Markie. Was there really a story or point to the third book. I think it was a journal of ther first months of marriage.

Landee said...

I'm glad it wan't based on anything real. Reality is for suckers.

Again, I feel for Markie. I think he's having a case of the "oversensitives cuz he chose the book" herpes.

Markie23 said...

For some reason her disclaimer bugged me. It made the author seem lazy to me... like she was just didn't want to go to the trouble of doing any actual research into real Greek culture and folklore, so she just made stuff up. It seems a little arrogant and presumptions... like she's dis'ing the real Greek folklore, which I'm sure is very interesting and rich on its own, to make up her own stuff.

Jenny ESP said...

It was merely a disclaimer that it was not to be confused with historical fiction. What's the biggie? Most books aren't.

samandlysander said...

So whats the big hype does something huge happen at the end. I feel like I am reading the same chapter over and over again.

Cristin said...

The author sounds lazy like me...I'm ok with lazy as long as it's interesting.

Hot Pants said...

For me it wasn't the disclaimer that threw me, but the picture of the author on the back of the second book. Nerd allert!!!

Cristin said...

::running to go look at the picture of the author:: be right back

Landee said...

I agree Amy! I couldn't even look at her cuz it ruined the book for me.

Markie23 said...

I am honestly very happy that everyone enjoyed the selection.

I really didn't have a problem with Gen. I liked him. I wanted to slap him a few times and tell him to snap out of it, but I thought he was a smart, clever, resourceful, funny guy. He was a "good man" in the manner of Jack Sparrow.

Jenny ESP said...

And mark, I adjusted your post, changed the post time, but you were supposed to post it at 8, doy, not 7:31.

Flem said...

I actually didn't even read the disclaimer. I don't care if it is based in reality or not.

Except sometimes people act like they know something about history since they saw The Patriot, that bugs me.

But this clearly wasn't supposed to be historical.

Landee said...

I forgot to mention in my review my epiphany...

Gen had some srs motive to get that stone and give it to Eddis. If Sounis had gotten it Attolia woulda had to marry him.

Gen couldn't have that.

Hot Pants said...

I'm sure she attends a lot of guild meetings.

Cristin said...

Is it me or does she look like a polygamist...not that I have a problem with polygamists...

Cristin said...

Hey Amy, below the belt.

Jenny ESP said...

Nerd is the word. Nerds write awesome books tho. And C, it is no where near Hunger Games, but it number two within our book club, IMO.

Sam, the first half of book one was way slow and boring. By the end, you will love Gen. And book two is sooooo good.

Flem said...

Oh yeah! Thanks landee for the reminder about that clever twist. The author shoulda foreshadowed that a bit more (stone being witheld from sounis.)

And I don't have the book anymore and am disappointed I can't see the nerdy author. Might make me like her even more.

Markie23 said...

ok Jenny... In LOTR the point of the book WAS to destroy the ring. In The Thief the point of the book was to GET the stone. And then they tossed it.... DUMB!

Cristin said...

Landee your brilliant, I didn't even think of that!

Hot Pants said...

I didn't get a chance to post a review, since I'm still 50 pages away from what I'm sure will be a very climactic ending.

Flem said...

I liked that we read a series. The problem with reading one book is that you read it quick and it is over.

Glad we didn't go with Goose Girl btw. It was super romantic and sugary sweet but this series was WAY better.

samandlysander said...

well I'm gonna try to fight through to the end. I tried reading it last night but all the traveling gave me a headache.

Cristin said...

Yeah Jenny...what mark said.

Jenny ESP said...

Mark, I made an excellent point. It's the same thing.

Markie23 said...

Poor Amy is going to be SO dissapointed.

Cristin said...

Flem, you make it sound like that book would have been bad for this group. I like sugary sweet.

Flem said...

In the Thief the stone was a distraction from the main plot which was the clever Gen. Stone was a supporting actor only.

LOTR the ring is the actor and the hobbitses are supporting actors.

Markie23 said...

Besides Gen, I liked Pol's character the best in the first book. Was it really necessary to kill him off? I would liked to have seen his character continue through the other books.

Flem said...

Cristin no doubt--it was a fun little read but it was sweet as in, fifth grade? Like the romance was meant for 10 year olds.

Kat said...

My first post...lucky enough to be a friend (I hope) of Landee.

The disclaimer didn't bother me. I wouldn't never have known that was were it took place if she hadn't. I've been to Greece and her descriptions didn't remind me of it.

Jenny ESP said...

Listen, Gen's job was to get the stone at all costs. That's it. It makes perfect sense to me that they destroy it, but then I'm a huge LOTR fan, so...

Cristin said...

Wasn't the point of the book to make you realize that Gen is very clever, that he tries to distract so he can work his magic?

Hot Pants said...

320 pages into the book and still waiting for the excitement. Sorry, but Breaking Dawn was more exciting than this.

I am in love with Gen though....

Cristin said...

Welcome Kat!

Cristin said...

I bet even Markie has a man crush on Gen. He's awesome!

Kat said...

Gen loved the Queen when she cut off his hand...ouch! Which hurt more?

Markie23 said...

Thanks Amy, and Cristin... I am not alone.

Cristin said...

no homo of course Markie

Flem said...

Markie I totally agree that Pol's life ended too quickly. I liked him and hope he comes back from the dead in book 4, "The One-Armed Man Who Would Be King."

Jenny ESP said...

Welcome Kat.

And I completely agree with Cristin and L and Flem... the story wasn't about the stone. It was about Gen.

Markie23 said...

Yes, I do have a man crush on Gen.

Gen, Peta - Compare/Contrast Go.

Jenny ESP said...

I did love Pol tho. I was way disappointed that he died.

Cristin said...

ahhh Peta...I need to go read about him again. I love him for all different reasons...

Hot Pants said...

Merkie, that's like comparing The guy who played Rudy to Orlando Blume. Gen is Orlando....

Jenny ESP said...

OOOOooo Gen and Petta. For starters, I'd tap them both...

Markie23 said...

very good Hot Pants.

Markie23 said...

Behind Edwards back Jenny?

Memzy said...

You gize can relax. I'm here now.

Markie23 said...

whew

Memzy said...

Who is gonna mention that Sophos is adorable and IMO.....gay.

Hot Pants said...

I loved his sneakyness. I pretty muched guessed the third book. There was a whole lot of traveling going on (which I ignored), and a lot of detailed descriptions (which the author let us know she made up, so again, I ignored).

Jenny ESP said...

They are both beyond self-sacrificing, and they are both unlikely heroes. One of them only has one hand tho...

Cristin said...

You can't do much behind Edwards back unless your Bella and we all know we don't want to be whiney Bella right?

Memzy said...

I wanna go shopping with Sophos and cry on his shoulder.

Markie23 said...

I don't know why Sophos was even in the books.

StandsMom said...

I read too much. It took me a few minutes to remember where Peeta was from. The chicken boy. I don't know. Gen runs a close second to Edward. Po is up there too. Post blind Po, at least.

Hot Pants said...

Was Sophos the kid Pol was supposed to protect? I couldn't remember either. Why did they even bring him up, and not mention it again. It was like she started to bring a story in, then forgot about it herself.

Cristin said...

So did anyone else question whether or not they were pronouncing names correctly?

Flem said...

ooh good compare Markie! Gen is a TON like lil Peta. I liked Peta more because he was built, but Gen is more clever.

Markie23 said...

I thought the Magus was an interesting character. I actually liked him and thought he was a good guy. I was disappointed that he sat in a cabin throughout the second and third books.

Jenny ESP said...

I don't get why anyone would be bugged that she made up a whole new world? And calling that lazy? So much work when into all those details. Very kreatif. Did you bother anyone that LOTR wasn't based on real history? What about Graceling? I don't understand the problem here. It's fiction.

Cristin said...

See and I thought the Magus was gay..not Sophos, I thought sophos was just one of those "sensitive" types.

Hot Pants said...

I didn't even waste my time Cristin.

StandsMom said...

Nicely said, JennyESP.

Landee said...

I'm guessing in book 4 Sophos will ride in as a man and sweep Eddis off her feet. She deserves love.

StandsMom said...

Sophos gay? Heck no. He was a scared boy.

Memzy said...

And Flem its Attolia right? Or is it Anatolia.

Kat said...

I agree with Jenny ESP...sometimes I like to read to "escape" the real world.

Jenny ESP said...

OMG, I can't believe that Stands could forget Peeta?!?!? And put him above lamerz Po? wha...

Flem said...

Magus was wasted in book 2/3 and I agree about sophos. Book 4 is probably going to be called King of Sounis and people will be like who?? Oh yeah. The guy with soft hands from book 1.

Markie23 said...

It just bugged me ok? Soooorrrrrry.

Cristin said...

Since I've guess that Gen loves the wrong woman, I do hope that Eddis finds love. I liked her, the little I read about her.

Jenny ESP said...

chicken boy??? You mean boy with the bread. ::wiping tears away::

Flem said...

Memz I probably messed up four or five names in my review because I didn't have the books with me. The details never stick on those kinds of things and with so many characters I can't keep the spelling straight. Thanks for calling me out tho.

Landee said...

This history Sophos and Gen have will come in handy.... markie my words.

Memzy said...

Don't mess with Jespy's knowledge of Hunger Games.

Hot Pants said...

Did anyone like the "stories" in the story?

Kat said...

I also like the Queen of Eddis. She deserves a good man.

Memzy said...

I can RARELY call you out Flem so I do it whenever possible.

Landee said...

And Flem, your questions about how did they not recognize Gen as the thief? No internet, duh. No TMZ.

And no one really practiced Gen's religion anymore so no one connected the EuGENedes/Gen thing.

StandsMom said...

Ok, cut me some slack. I've read like 10 books since Graceling. Peeta was just cute, I think. Self-sacrificing and clever. Those things were good. Po was tall and totally strong and way handsome. But he turned into a big BOOB at the end. Gen seemed boobish too sometimes, but true to the nature of a man (no offense, Markie) he way over-whined when he was hurt or sick.

Markie23 said...

yup, I like them.... even though they were MADE UP.

Cristin said...

Yeah Jespy has a love like no other for Peta and The hunger Games.

Flem said...

Po is hardly worth remembering especially post blind. Gen owned this series an Po was the wimpy man candy of whatshername.

Memzy said...

ps. Drew Barrymore for Eddis is perfect. Or maybe Hillary Swank. That girl can act but she's not too pretty.

Markie23 said...

Careful Mother of Stand.

StandsMom said...

Bread boy, you're right. I just imagine chickens wandering around in the yard. I don't know why.

Landee said...

I loved it when they headed into Eddis at the end of The Thief and you're all thinking they were in trouble getting captured again and Eddis was all "Oh.... it's just you Eugenedes."

Lollerz!

Cristin said...

I can see Hillary Swank as Eddis. She has a cute enough personality that it makes her cuter.

Jenny ESP said...

I did not thing Sophos was gay. First, they didn't exist back then...

Hot Pants said...

Thanks to Markie, I pictured no one other than Kierra Nightly as Attolia. She ended up being a perfect fit. Along with Orlando...

StandsMom said...

Wimpy man candy is AWESOME!!!

Landee said...

And Jafar as the Magus, no?

Markie23 said...

I never felt a connection with Costis's character. I didn't like the switch to seeing things through his eyes instead of Gen's.

Hot Pants said...

Yeah, gays didn't come around until after windows.

Cristin said...

How do you know they didn't exist...it's pretend?

Cristin said...

But doesn't the Queen of Attolia have to be pretty??? Kiera really?

Flem said...

If you saw Hilary Swank in the hospital being euthanized you wouldn't refer to her as cute.

::shudders::

Hot Pants said...

I still can't decide if I like Costis. I'll wait to tell you after I finish the climax.

Markie23 said...

The fact that Landee pictures Jafar as the Magus underscores what a ripoff of Alladin, The Thief was.

Landee said...

Who loved Gen sitting on the throne like he was bored outta his gourd?

::raising hand:: Me did.

Jenny ESP said...

I loved Eddis' nonchalant reaction to Gen arriving half dead. That was perfect. She didn't over-do the hero thing. Humility and all.

Landee said...

I liked Costis/Matt Damon.

Hawt.

Markie23 said...

Poor Amy is going to be SO dissapointed.

Flem said...

I loved Costis. He real man.

Hot Pants said...

I hope we don't all die of the swine flu before the fourth book comes out. That would be a disappointment.

StandsMom said...

I always kind of inwardly groaned when they started telling another 'story.' But, somewhere into the stories, I decided they were kind of interesting. Even so, I just wanted the story to keep moving.

Landee said...

But I did miss being inside Gen's head.

I love that little scoundrel.

Memzy said...

Cuz Gen needs action and intrigue.

Stuff that I have.

Flem said...

Landee I loved him being bored for the first 1/3 of the story but then I wanted him to start saying clever things.

Markie23 said...

Costis punched the king. It all went downhill from there.

Cristin said...

I agree with StandsMom, I really wanted the story to keep going.

Landee said...

Oh oh oh!!!! Another favorite part was when that old lady queen attendant was telling Gen a story and he's like "Um, no, I don't like this one... I want one with a happy ending."

Ahhhh.... he keelz me.

Memzy said...

Sophos is gay. Period

Jenny ESP said...

Oh yes, I thought it was fitting that he wasn't a good king at first, and still acting super lazy. Loved it.

Kat said...

Right on Landee...Gen kept me snickerin' through Book 3.

Jenny ESP said...

Gays came after pocket watches were invented. Everyone knows that.

Markie23 said...

Eddis is also gay so her and Sophos will be good together.

Hot Pants said...

So far the third book has been 320 pages of Costis not sure if he respects the king, he's gotta be loyal, he hates the king, he's gotta save the king, he's just internally tormented and there's only 50 some pages left. He's gotta decide quick, so they can get to the plot!

Flem said...

Markie--You didn't like Cos punching the king? Why? Did you like the books prior to that tragic moment?

Jenny ESP said...

I agree with Stands. Don't like stories in my stories just tell the story, keep it moving.

Markie23 said...

No Flem, I LOVED Cos punching the King. I wanted to punch him myself.

Landee said...

And was he just jokin' around when he'd "get lost" in the palace? I mean he knew that place inside & out since he was a boy.

PS I knew the whole time he was sneakin' over to Attolia's chambers with out those jagbags knowing. Duh.

Hot Pants said...

Yeah, Eddis=major lesbo. "Not that there's anything wrong with it."

Cristin said...

Eddis is gay too???

Memzy said...

ps.

Manic Mandee just made a new blog post. So I guess she didn't read the books.

Markie23 said...

I'm lovin' your comments Amy. Wish you had a review out there to stand by mine.

Landee said...

Eddis is not lezbean, you gize. Stop it.

Pol was gay tho.

Cristin said...

Pol??? what???

Jenny ESP said...

You would have to love Gen to love book three. It was indulgent nonsense, not a lot of clever plot. I loved it. But then again, if you didn't love the plotting in book one or two, I don't know what would satisfy you. I thought it was deliciously twisty and turny.

Markie23 said...

Eddis was SO gay. If not don't you think she would have been all over her little slave boy?

Memzy said...

Cuz they were doing it Jespy?

Hot Pants said...

I was hoping to finish them earlier, but I ended up having to go to church today. Someone needed a sub, and I foolishly answered the phone. Otherwise, I totally would have had my book read and the review up.

Memzy said...

Pol + Sophos. I see you now Landee.

Jenny ESP said...

I loved Costis too. He reminded me of Sophos actually.

Landee said...

Lemme get this straight....

Markie + Watership Down = TLA
Markie + The Thief= lamerz.

It's like I don't know you at all, Sir Markie of Springville.

Cristin said...

Good point Markie! But maybe she had a secret crush on him but wasn't feelin the love from him so she never said anything. Maybe she was saving herself for Gen....you never know...but then again maybe you do.

Markie23 said...

I'm an enigma.

Hot Pants said...

It was entertaining enough Jespy, but I was expecting more of a plot in the third book. The first two had a lot more action. So of course, I expected that out of the thirdbook too.

Landee said...

What little slave boy?

Memzy said...

Gen is here right now gize. I've gotta go soon. He's giving me the eyes.

Cristin said...

we love you anyway Markie...I mean you brought up these books to be voted on.

Jenny ESP said...

And I LOVED that Gen was sneaking over to queen B's bed chamber every single night to do it, and that he didn't give a crap if everyone thought they weren't consummating and S. He didn't care. That's what made him so cool and manly, even with only one hand.

Markie23 said...

her little thief Landee, C'mon.

Landee said...

Exactly Jespy. HE DIDN'T CARE. So refreshing in this world of keeping up with the joneses.

Hot Pants said...

I liked that Gen still had his forearm. So hot.

Cristin said...

I still can't believe he's one handed...shoooooooooooocking

Markie23 said...

I didn't know he was off consummating. Were we supposed to assume that? I figured he was off eaves dropping on the queens enemies.

Hot Pants said...

I did like that about Gen. He reminded me so much of myself.

Landee said...

Hooks are the new fauxhawk.

Flem said...

The third had room for twists but just didn't go there as much.

Markie I heart that you loved Watership Down and not this series (even though I liked them) because that is an indicator that you are a real man. These books were def. girly.

Hot Pants said...

I only have 3 minutes, then Dwight is going to start the Amazing race! He said I have to watch it with him. He threatened me.

Landee said...

As opposed to the epitome of manliness that is Watership Down.

Markie23 said...

::spitting and scratching my crotch::

StandsMom said...

Don't you think it was weird when they closed the door on Gen and the Queen and it was all implied that they were gonna do it, but all of those stupid soldiers just stood around outside the door? Could you imagine? The ladies-in-waiting. Just waiting. That would freak me out.

Hot Pants said...

Go wash you hands Markie.

Flem said...

What is our next book?

PS Katie 2.0 didn't like The Thief but she is too chikin to say it.

Memzy said...

Lollerz Landee..

Lollerz.

Kat said...

Not whitty with words but totally enjoy reading the posts.

Looking foward to next month's book. When will we know?

Markie23 said...

Those wabbit were damn manly!

Landee said...

The attendants were creepsville! I couldn't stand any of them. Even the quiet old ladies sitting around on benches in the waiting areas.

Bu-ggy.

Flem said...

Watership Down is a total manly book. It is about fighting and relegating women to scratching holes and breeding. The characters are based on military heroes. What is not manly about that?

Except the rabbits bit. I know, memzy, I know.

Jenny ESP said...

Markie, that just shows that you didn't get Gen. It's like you saw him as Costis saw him, and not for what he really was. Of course he was jumping in bed with queen B.

Memzy said...

Kat, btw, WELCOME!!! You don't have to be witty to comment. We love having more people around.

Landee said...

Katie 2.0.... what. is. your. problem?????

AND you send Flem to do your durty work?

C'mon.

Hot Pants said...

SeaCrest out, gize!

Markie23 said...

I repeat my earlier comment...

I really didn't have a problem with Gen. I liked him. I wanted to slap him a few times and tell him to snap out of it, but I thought he was a smart, clever, resourceful, funny guy. He was a "good man" in the manner of Jack Sparrow.

Flem said...

I do have to say that I love how we are starting to build a repertoire of characters--we compared from like five books in this post.

Yay for SRBC!!

Markie23 said...

love ya Amy... see ya.

Landee said...

Amy, you're twice as tall as Seacrest.

Cristin said...

You definitely don't have to be witty to speak up here otherwise I would never get to comment lol

Kat said...

Thanks! Landee has made AI more interesting, and (althought I love reading) I think this book club will make reading A LOT more fun! :)

Landee said...

Cut & paste Markie? Talk about lazy authoring....

Markie23 said...

Chime in any time Kat... especially if you were not a big fan... I'm taking a real beating here.

Landee said...

Kat, thou dost flatter me too mucheth.

It was fun chit chatting about gen at church today though! haha.

Jenny ESP said...

Um yeah. The Thief was way more manly than watership down.

And Katie, Markie needs help defending his position, so jump in there

Markie23 said...

Boy that night at the Tavern sure was fun huh?

Cristin said...

You have to be tough like Markie if you want to go up against these gals.

Kat said...

Wouldn't put myself in the "Series Fan Club"...just in the "Love Gen Club"!

Markie23 said...

I musta had like 3 diet cokes... whew!

Landee said...

Jenny & Cristin... were you aware of Markie's pozish on this? You could have warned us a bit.

StandsMom said...

Y'all are so funny! This is the greatest. Srsly. And this month, I get to enjoy the posts from the comfort of my own couch. Me too, Kat. I'm anxious for the next book. Who's picking?

Cristin said...

I want to go back to the Tavern and watch AI...though I'm not up for a long drive for some reason

Jenny ESP said...

It was a BAR not a tavern

Cristin said...

Sorry Landee, I did know that he wasn't thrilled with them...sorry
