SRBC PICK FOR APRIL...

And the winner is:

THE QUEENS THIEF SERIES by Megan Whalen Turner
  • The Thief
  • The Queen of Attolia
  • The King of Attolia

This was the clear winner even if didn't count the votes that came in from some people I've never heard of, and who have never participated in the book club before (not that you aren't welcome to join us, but please... introduce yourself and let us know how you found your way to our little club).

It's going to take a great deal of effort to read all three books before the end of the month. We will have our meeting on Sunday May 3rd. The previous Sunday many of the book club members will be at a family gathering in Idaho. That means that, including today and May 3rd, we have 33 days to read a total of 1,104 pages. That works out to almost 33.5 pages per day!

Don't panic... they aren't BIG pages, and they are written at a grade school reading level so I don't think it'll be as hard as it sounds. But... Don't delay! Start reading as soon as possible. I'm no Queso (hard act to follow), but I'll try my best to encourage you along the way.

If you can only manage to read one or two of the books then at least do that. If necessary we will divide the reviews and discussions so that anyone wishing to avoid spoilers can still participate in discussions for the book(s) they read. Good Luck, and happy reading!!

You are on top of things, Markie. I was really torn between this choice and the one I voted for so I am happy. I also like the date being set right now so that I don't miss it again.

Greetings

I come by way of Flem and, if it’s not creepy, would love to join in.

If it helps my case, I have an *extensive* book club resume, which includes 3 years w/ the ward “Book Garden,” where I had the distinguished honor of serving as the only member who didn’t qualify for social security benefits.

I’m also quite diverse. I heart the classics, but also like to loan Flem books that have lots and lotsa cussin’.

So…If nobody minds, I think I’ll hop over to Amazon and get me the Thief Series.

If anybody DOES mind, well excuse me. You people really should go private.

Any friend of Flem is a friend of mine! Thanks for joining us, and when I get through this series I'll have to hit you up for some good cussin' book recommendations.

Sweetness, Mark. I'll go keep my favorite book store in business...

Eek, it's good to know that your lack of participation had to do with calender issues, and not because we weren't reading Sweet Valley High #1.

Katie, we were actually looking to fill the position of "Katie" in our book club, so this is perfect. We have another one that pops in here every once and a while and talks about her library books on hold, but that's it.

Landee said...

Some of my favorite SRBC moments have involved Katie and her library holds. ::sigh::

K, fine. I'll read these books about robbers, but I'm gonna finish The Goose Girl first. It started getting good last night and I didn't stop reading until about 3am. So glad it's spring break.

Markie23 said...

I bought The Goose'd Girl so I'll eventually read that too. I also bought Redwall just in case IT got picked. The only books I didn't buy.... yeah, the Queen's Thief books. I really didn't think they'd get picked. Now the bookstore doesn't have The Thief in stock so they're ordering it for me. Sheeesh.

I like that the new Katie gave us her resume. Little did she know, all she had to say was, "I know how to read". I'm still working on my reading skillz, so good thing we picked the grade school books.

I'm thrilled with the choice, would have been happy with any of them and will probably read them all anyway! I LOVE getting book suggestions.

So, nobody asked for my BC resume. Good thing cause I don't have one. Well, not true. I tried one book club about 5 years ago and it peetered out after about book 3. All churchy books, not that there's anything wrong with that. ::ahem::

Otherwise, hadn't read anything of consequence until Twilight came into my life and lit up my...uh...welllllllll. So anyways, now I'm reading anything I can get my hands on (highly recommended by friends I mean).

Gotta go book shoppin'!

Katie said...

Thanks all.

I suspect Flem will not be as welcoming. This afternoon she made me go to the library to return her overdue copy of "Slumlording for Dummies" and while there, I checked out the only copy of The Thief for myself. Catfight.

We're also looking to fill the position of "Rakudragonflame" in our book club, so if anyone with that user name wants to join, please do.

^^^LollERZ!!

I'm so on it. But I'm worried about The Thief. None of my libraries have copies and according to Jespy, her bookstores don't either. But I do already have book 2. Should I just start already?

I love Katie 2.0!! But how are we gonna tell them apart? Both witty and know how to read and stuff.

Memzy said...

Can Katie 2.0 change her username to............Katie 2.0? Other suggests?

Katie said...

Excellent! I thought ahead and put all the book on hold, and I got notified today that they are in and ready to be picked up. I am all over those 1000+ pages.

Katie said...

What in the?!? I can't believe you guys! Here I am, a faithful book clubber, and I am given the shaft just because Watership down never came in. I did some hard thinking about it Jenny...I have gotten every other SRBC book with plenty of time. How did you think I was able to participate so awesomely during the "Pretties" discussion? And Graceling? Yeah, I got that one right away too, but it was your horrible review that made it feel like a brick every time I picked it up.

::waiting for the begging forgiveness to start::

No offense Katie, but I am renaming you lesser Katie. Unless you think I should be Queen of the Katie's. I am cool with either.

Jenny ESP said...

Ah! Katie, my fair-weather friend!

Landee said...

One of the Katie's needs to permanently change their handle cuz it's SOOOOOO confusing me. It's half way through the comment before I realize it's not the Katie I was thinking it was.

I suggest one be KatiePervyGnome and the other be KatieLovesGnomes.

That should clear things up.

I think I like Landee's best. It's clever, concise, and I'm sure won't raise any questions at all when I'm commenting on other people's blogs.

KissingBabyKatie & FlashingBoobieKatie

Markie23 said...

Or maybe Katie 2.0 is the one being kissed?, or maybe they are her kids? Ok, nevermind... but I still like FlashingBoobieKatie.

KatiePervyGnome said...

To be or not to be FlashingBoobieKatie.

These are the kinds of probing questions that were missing from my ward Book Garden.

Brooke said...

Hello there! I am the afformentioned "rakudragonflame," although that's not exactly what I wanted my name to be.

Which is why I deleted my first comment. And then spent hours trying to figure out (unsuccessfully) how to change my name... It should be "Brooke" now. I hope it is. Because I'm not deleting this if it isn't.

So! I hope to be allowed to follow this impressive-looking online book club! My resume is as follows:

1. Eighteen years of extensive study concerning the English language.

2. I've actually already read many of the books you guys have picked, so I'm not behind.

3. Just bought a bubble wand from Walmart for $1 (Also own the current books up for this month.)

Thank you for your consideration, and I would be greatly honored to be accepted for this position.

Katie said...

No one does Katie better than me (except Tom.)

Markie23 said...

Well, Jespy is really the boss around here Brooke; she just let me pretend like I was in charge for a little while. I think the bubble wand definitely qualifies you, but I really really wish you had stuck with rakudragonflame.
P.S. Now that we are going to be practically related, might I have a peek at your blog? -markdbailey at gmail dot com

Hey Brooke, welcome! If you send me your email address, I can add you as a contributor so you can post your review when the time comes. And I'll totally check out your blog too if you invite me. ;)

I'm terribly sorry, but I've never used this blogging-site-thing before, so I have no blogs. Or ideas of how to add people or what not.

But I would totally let you look at whatever blog I had, if indeed I had one.

GREAT pic Markie. I totally loved the Thief. I had to steal it from Katie which actually worked out well for me because I have a $35 fine at the library from losing the CD from Slumlording for Dummies.

Plus, bonus, the King and Queen are waiting for me now. I guess I will have to pay up anyway.

Jill said...

Hi, I,m Jill. I know Memzy from church. I have been pilfering your book club blog for good reads. I usually don't get a hold of the book you are on until way after the fact (waiting for it to arrive at my library), but I have been loving having something good to read again. Just thought I would out myself.

Markie23 said...

Welcome Jill! Hope you can get these books in time and join us for the reviews and discussion.
