Graceling Discussion:

Discuss Graceling in the comments of this post.

A few things to think about...

(As Markie asked...) What is your natural grace?

What do you wish was your natural grace?

Why do you think the people who had graces were dissed?

Compare/contrast yourself to Katsa. Do you cry a lot?

Who were you're favorite characters in the book and why?

What was your favorite scene in the book? (hehe)

Was there anything in the book that made you go whoa wha... ?

Would you recommend this book to friends? What about to young adult readers? Explain yourself.

Finally, here's some "fun" questions I fandangoed from here.....

1. If you were cornered by an army of the king’s soldiers, would you

a) Fight each and every one to the death (not yours, theirs)

b) Make a mad dash for it?

c) Surrender peacefully with your dignity, but trembling inside?
d) Play dead?

2. Choose your preferred weapon:
a) your own two hands and brute strength
b) dagger
c) bow & arrow
d) none—you’re a pacifist

3. Do you know how to build and light a fire without matches in the snow?

4. Would you rather:
a) Fight a mountain lion?
b) Fall in love?
c) Overthrow a corrupt king?
d) Sleep?

5. Your best friend is:
a) a studly warrior prince
b) a horse
c) a bookish, but sweet prince
d) your nursemaid

7. Do you enjoy martial arts?

8. Regarding strangers on the internet, do you:
a) Approach suspiciously, if at all?
b) Try to read their minds?
c) Avoid them when possible?
d) Befriend them immediately— what’s the harm?

Markie checking in

Landee said...

My natural grace is blogging, obviously.

Markie23 said...

and podcasting, obviously.

Jenny ESP said...

and being on time obviously

Markie23 said...

I am completely graceless by the way.

samandlysander said...

Man, I couldn't get past the first chapter. I really did try though.

Landee said...

Markie, you can make anything into something perverted. Don't sell yourself short here.

Markie23 said...

Sammy! I can't believe you didn't get farther

Landee said...

Sam, wha??? You gotta get past all the lame kingdom talk! Oh man... you'd love Po.

samandlysander said...

It just seemed so boring in the beginning but maybe it will pick up. I'm still gonna try to read it.

Landee said...

So Markie, I was glad you at least semi-enjoyed the book. I was starting to think I was crazy.

Jenny ESP said...

Sam, the first few chapters were the best part, so if you couldn't get thru that, then I don't blame you.

Jenny ESP said...

so what's wrong with me that i'm the only one who gagged on this book?

Markie23 said...

don't listen to Jespy... she's dead inside.

Markie23 said...

I had no problem with hot tears. I liked her character.

Landee said...

^^^ knew it.

Jenny ESP said...

why did you like her? she had pre-marital!!!

Markie23 said...

I also had no problem with Po going blind. Because he's NOT blind. He sees everything.

Hot Pants said...

1- C or D
2- A
3- No
4- B or D
5- C

7- No
8- D

Landee said...

She didn't even know what tears were at first. Then she couldn't contain them once Po opened the flood gates. Jenny has no empathy.

Markie23 said...

Yeah, I loved the pre-marital.

Hot Pants said...

The hardest decision I had to make was, would I prefer to sleep or fall in love.

Jenny ESP said...

You know what bugged me, the author totally relied on tears to show strong emotion. So un-Hunger Gamesish, don't you think?

Landee said...

I'd play dead, for the record.

Markie23 said...

Love first, then sleep (male perspective)

Memzy said...

Wha? ::blowing nose with honk::

Hot Pants said...

I hate to cry and I hate criers.

Jenny ESP said...

Oh pleeeeease. She "didn't know what tears were"??? Lamerz.

Amy, I think your hardest decision was whether to sleep or read the book. Or maybe that was an easy decision. You picked sleep, right?

Landee said...

If I'm ever in your presence when you cry hot tears, Jenny, be prepared for a slap across the face.

Memzy said...

You are the only one Jespy. I just hope you still consider me worthy if reading and critiquing books

Markie23 said...

I felt there was an evolution of Katsa's character from hard assasin type (mostly inferred from unwritten back story) to sensitive caring person.

Hot Pants said...

Judge not lest ye be judged.
Remember, when you point a finger at someone, there are three more pointing right back at you.

Jenny ESP said...

I would rather overthrow a corrupt king buy falling in love with him and then sleeping with him. I'm all about world peace.

Landee said...

My last comment was from Katie.

Memzy said...

Basically Katsa was a major B until Po unlocked her.

Landee said...

Don't forget your seabane Jenny.

Jenny ESP said...

Right Markie, but all we got to see were the hot tears. I think I was expecting a more Katniss character. They share few qualities, unfortunately.

Landee said...

I'm gonna go slash up some animals here when we're done.... just for kicks.

Markie23 said...

Amen, Memzy

Memzy said...

That was so pwerful hot pants

Jenny ESP said...

Who did you like better Katniss or Katsa? This will help mold my opinion of you so answer carefully.

Landee said...

Also, Jenny, I know one of your big complaints was that you couldn't understand what Po saw in Katsa.... I dare say his grace helped him to see stuff in her that even YOU couldn't see.

Hot Pants said...

I went to church today Memzy.

Jenny ESP said...

Who do you think will win in a fight, Katniss or Katsa?

Katsa would probably be shocked and "with her eyes wide, slowly sit down on the floor" Indian style.

Hot Pants said...

That was DEEP Landee/Katie

Landee said...

Katniss, obviously. But you tried to RETRACT this book. WHat the? Definitely not worthy of being ganked from the SRBC.

Markie23 said...

Honestly, I didn't notice all the crying that seems to have bothered you so Jenny. I never once thought of Katsa as a whiny overly sensitive person. I don't like whiny characters (i.e. Wanda/whoever) either, but I never got that impression about Katsa.

Jenny ESP said...

L--if Po saw something in Katsa that we didn't, I would have appreciated the author sharing that info with us. It would have helped.

Memzy said...

Katniss, obviously. But Katsa is a "wild kat". You can't help but like her.

Jenny ESP said...

L--you TOLD me I should retract it, geek! Don't blame me.

Markie23 said...

Katniss rocks!!

Jenny ESP said...

Markie--sometimes tears would slowly roll down her cheeks over stupid stuff. It was enough to make me go huh?

Landee said...

I didn't notice all the tears either, Markie.

I was too busy getting caught up in Po's eyes. He kept catching me in them and stuff.

Memzy said...

I don't think I've ever heard Landee been called a geek. I kinda like it.

Jenny ESP said...

I wouldn't have minded lots of tears if the situation had called for it.

Markie23 said...

If I'm not mistaken didn't Katniss shed some hot tears of her own?

Hot Pants said...

I think people who cry a lot don't notice other people crying. But those of us who are man enough to keep it bottled up, notice even the slightest glistening in the eye, and it makes me very uncomfortable.

Hot Pants said...

Katnis DID cry and it bugged!

Landee said...

J-- YOU TOLD me it was lame and stupid and retarded and I should put it straight in the garbage can... what was I supposed to think? I hadn't read it yet, nerdball.

Jenny ESP said...

OK, so what about that whole part where she had to talk the captain of the ship and her crew into staying out to sea so they wouldn't be effected by king bad guy? All that wasn't necessary in the end, so why waste time on it? It was like when Bella spent all that time trying to get fake IDs for Nessie and didn't need them in the end.

Markie23 said...

Get over the tears already Jespy. Some people are just made that way. Just because I... I mean somebody cries when old yeller dies doesn't mean I'm.... I mean they're weak OK?!

Jenny ESP said...

Markie--like I said, if the situation calls for tears, I have no problem. But don't abuse the tears. Katsa cried over having to get dressed up!!! Some tough girl.

Landee said...

I was thinking about that part today and I think it's so that when she arrives at the house and the butler guy is like "OH yeah, my master has been waiting for you" you get a little tingly feeling thinking that Po is there and THEN they are gonna go hunt down Leck. So when Leck's fat A is sitting in there you wanna scream.

Personally I was glad Katsa shoved a dagger down his throat as quickly as possible.

Jenny ESP said...

Hot Pants--lollerz. I love that you're a cold hearted snake.

Markie23 said...

Maybe she has two graces... survival, and super sensitive tear ducts.

Memzy said...

I would like to talk about the love scene. Me like.

Landee said...

Amy's grace is bottling up emotions in an unhealthy way. Hmmm... that'd actually be useful in some situations.

Landee said...

It was only one paragraph. Me no like.

Landee said...

Hello? Are you all watching the Oscars?

Markie23 said...

Totally disagree L - that was my major complaint. I was already thinking of how cool this situation was, and what extremely clever way they were going to overcome this obstacle of the King being able to mess with their minds, when all a sudden it was over, because Katsa suddenly overcame the Jedi Mind trick. I thought it was lame, and a total let down.

Jenny ESP said...

L--nerd bomber.

K, Q/Flem couldn't be here tonight, but she said something in her review that I wanted to point out...

"...why slice up the little animals? I get it, he is one dimensional, pure evil, etc., but couldn't he just be a molester? Isn't that evil enough?"

So were you more grossed out by the cutting than the molesting?

Markie23 said...

Completely forgot about the Oscars.

Hot Pants said...

You should talk to some of the people who have had to deal with my bottled up emotions that explode every so often.

Hot Pants said...

It's a powerful gift I have been given.

Jenny ESP said...

Markie--way anti climatic ending. lamerz. There should have been some insurmountable obstacle that she eventually mounts in a clever way at the end. And way was Bitterblue suddenly immune? Convenient.

Memz--yes, lets talk love making...

Memzy said...

Kate Winslet just won best actress.

Markie23 said...

I prefer the animal cutter to the molester myself. A dagger to the throat for a cutter, and one further south for the molester.

Landee said...

Markie-- really? You would have been up for an entirely new adventure of hunting down the king? I was exhausted and glad it was over. In my mind I was screaming "KILL HIM NOW!" so I was happy when she obeyed.

J-- nerdy nerderson.

The molesting was worse. But it wasn't exactly described in detail by anyone. I was appreciative of that.

Memzy said...

I was all hot and tingly wishing Po were getting some seabane for me.

Landee said...

BB was immune cuz when he has hurt someone close to them they aren't affected. Remember when BB asked Po why it didn't work on him and he was like "Er, uh, cuz he killed my aunt and stuff."

Yeah, pay attention, geek wad.

Hot Pants said...

My head is pounding and this screen isn't doing me any favors. I'm out early gize. Bummed I missed out on the sex talk though. I'll make sure I catch up in the morning.

Markie23 said...

yeah, I would have preferred a drawn out hunt and showdown with the king that a drawn out trek back through the mountains to hang out at the cabin for another winter.

Jenny ESP said...

L--like I said, convenient. She changed the rules on us.

OMGOMGOMG, ROB PATTERSON is sitting behind Mickey Rorke. So frickin hawt!!!

Markie23 said...

I love these insults Landee is throwing out. A hidden grace perhaps?

Memzy said...

I love the "geek" talk around here.

Jenny ESP said...

Markie--here here. I about died when I heard we were in for another journey. And then they pulled a "Wild Hearts Can't be Broken" trick on us.

Markie23 said...

The Oscars - A bunch of flaming liberals patting themselves on the back. Sickening.

Landee said...

I want Gty to become a mind reader... just for the love making. Then i wouldn't have to be like "Not there... THERE... duh!"

It'd be nice.

Hot Pants said...

Um, I said goodnight. Whatever!

Markie23 said...

Wooo, whoa, wha? HELLO

Memzy said...

It's Edward!!!!!!!! Eeeeeek!

Markie23 said...

Hope you feel better Hot Pants. Take two Advil and call me in the morning.

Landee said...

Oh, nighty night Hotpants. So you keep sad feelings inside, but not anger? Good to know... good to know..

Markie, you heard me.

Hot Pants said...

Thanks Markie, I already took 4 Ibuprofen. Think it would still be ok?

Memzy said...

Ewe Landee. And Jespy has to look Gty in the eye this weekend.

Landee said...

And yes, hated Kat's hurrdid. I kept trying to imagine it sassy, but it didn't work very well.

Hot Pants said...

The sadness turns to anger.

Memzy said...

Sean freaking Penn. Had to bring prop 8 into it

Markie23 said...

Maybe you just need to work on your communication skillz L.

Landee said...

The downside to a mind reader would be that he'd know I was going through my grocery list sometimes or just wanting to answer that text I just heard ring.

Landee said...

Memzy, some people are watching this DELAYED... zip it!

Jenny ESP said...

I just took 4 advil.

Markie23 said...

I think men know that is going on Landee... strangely, we're OK with it.

Markie23 said...

Can't wait for the SRBC stimulus package. There are what, like 4 of us here now?

Markie23 said...

Or maybe its just me now.

Markie23 said...

I'm not sensing anybody.

Markie23 said...

Curse my gracelessness

Memzy said...

I'm here. I'm here.

Landee said...

I'm here. I just had to take care of something (pee).

Markie23 said...

Thanks for sharing

Markie23 said...

Jespy's must be a number two.

Landee said...

Sophia Lauren is a freak show.

Markie23 said...

Ok, well this discussion if fizzling out. Kinda like the end of Graceling. I guess I should get some zzzzz's

Landee said...

K, Landee out.

Markie23 said...

Goodnight ::Single tear rolling down my cheek::

Memzy said...

Sophia Loren = creepynastiness

Jenny ESP said...

OH man!!! I missed the ending!! I got a phone call. The whole thing fell apart without me...

Landee said...

Too little, too late, Jespy. I'm already asleep.

Jenny ESP said...

Some peoples husbands know without knowing, ya know.<--trying to revive things

Landee said...

Every time? Be serious.

Jenny ESP said...

Yep.

Landee said...

I've been married longer than you... you can't lie to me.

Jenny ESP said...

that was so cliche when she cut her hair. cuz girls with long hair can't kick A? <--revival attempt 2

Landee said...

Who picks the next book?

Jenny ESP said...

Listen, Tony's just good. That's all. Don't compare your gty. That's sad. Plus, I have to look him in the eye and stuff.

Landee said...

You can look him in the eye and then hear us (me) later that night if you want. We'll leave the door cracked open.

Jenny ESP said...

So, Q/Flem is going to pick the next book. The big reveal will be tomorrow. So exciting!!

Jenny ESP said...

Watch it, or I won't be pushing the twiners together.

Jenny ESP said...

Are you so excited to find out what we will be reading next??? It's like Oprah in here.

Landee said...

We can do it in a twin or on the floor. Don't threaten me.

Landee said...

I have my guesses coming from Flem.....

Jenny ESP said...

Don't throw them out there. It needs to be a dramatic surprise.

Landee said...

Fine. Now I'm srsly out. No amount of begging will make me return this time.
