Reality TV: Uncensored (The Hunger Games discussion)

If reality TV didn’t all of a sudden become beyond lamerz so nobody watched it anymore, this is exactly where it was headed, people. Pretty soon it wasn’t going to be enough for someone to eat a live rat on TV or practically starve on a beach somewhere while camera crews hovered near by. No, Mark Burnett would have eventually come up with this. Throw 24 people into a ginormous arena (after they signed consent forms and waivers and stuff) and have them fight to the death. And Jeff Probst would have hosted & made Katniss shine in her interview. And people would have bet on who was going to win. And it would have gotten HUGE ratings! If only it weren’t for the murder part of it. Dangitalltoheck!

Things I LOVED:
• The writing. Unlike somebody else (pointing at SMeyer), Suzanne wastes no words. Every back story she tells, every description of scenery, every freaking sentence means something. LOVE that.
• Peeta. He had me at “blonde hair across his forehead,” continued with getting beat by his mother to give Katniss some bread and finalized it with his sense of humor & devotion to Kat.
• The social commentaries. The one I can think of right now is when she’s describing the people of the Capital and how they do surgeries to look younger and thinner. Then she says “In District 12, looking old is something of an achievement since so many people die early. You see and elderly person you want to congratulate them on their longevity, ask the secret of survival. A plump person is envied because they aren’t scraping by like the majority of us. But here it is different. Wrinkles aren’t desirable. A round belly isn’t a sign of success.”
• Katniss. She is a girl who will do what has to be done. That’s it and that’s all. She killed that friendly lynx at the beginning of the story because it was scaring off her prey. She took over as head of her household at 11 years old because it was do that or starve to death. She volunteered to take Prim’s place (I literally bawled when the crowd refused to clap, btw). Even though she despises the Capital, she played right to the Capital audience because that is what it took to get her home. My absolute favorite part is when she is up in the tree & overhears the Careers and Peeta talking. She then jumps down out of the tree after they have left and knows how excited the “audience at home” is going to be after they realize she had been in the tree that whole time & heard everything. Then she goes “So as I slide out of the foliage and into the dawn light, I pause a second, giving the cameras time to lock on me. Then I cock my head slightly to the side and give a knowing smile. There! Let them figure out what that means!” Srsly, I lollerzed.
• The terms used for things: mockingjays, tracker jackers, nightlock berries…. All very good descriptive names for things.
• Cinna. The classy homosexual stylist we all want to be our BFF.
• Favorite scenes that stood out: Peeta shaking his head a little so Kat wouldn’t go after the bow & arrows at the Cornucopia (that place is whack, yo!).The tracker jacker attack on the Careers. Genius I tell ya. Her alliance with Rue/decorating Rue’s body as a way to rebel. District 11 sending Kat the loaf of bread. Finding Peeta in the stream all camoflauged. My heart fluttered a bit when he said “Come to finish me off, sweetheart?” The berries killing Foxface deaderz. The ingenious plan of pretending to eat the berries so they could both win.

Things I Didn’t Like:
• The Muttations. Srsly. Creepy. Yucky. Me no likey.
• Kat’s inability to see that anyone could love her. It was quite Bella-ish. I was screaming in my head the whole time “Pull yer head out Kat! Geesh!” But then again, if she had effortlessly fallen in love with Peeta then what kind of a story would this be? I know. But still. Pull it out.

I realize I can’t cover everything in this book. I hope more will come out in the comments.

Bottom line, I loved it. Loved it. And then loved it some more.

Some things to ponder:

What will happen with Kat & Gale now?

How awful would it be to be a mentor or stylist for one of the tributes who was killed?

How gross is it to think about eating rabbit?

Why was there no mention of how & when Kat sealed the deal?

Why do I, a happily married woman, want Peeta to frost my cake?

First to comment!!!! YES!!!!!!

sarastrasser said...

Now I have to go read the review.

Memzy said...

Dangit!! I thought I'd be first.

sarastrasser said...

You have to be pretty depressed to home to beat me in the commentaries.

Markie23 said...

I loved the book... thank you Landee for nominating it. That almost makes up for snubbing me when you came to Utah... and then going to WA to hang out with the "cool" bloggers. It's OK though. Since you sent Burn-Z my way you are forgiven. Just don't let it happen again - 'nuff said.

Landee said...

Mmmmkay... 5 comments and nary a deep thought in the bunch. Is this the kind of magic you were hoping for ESP?

sarastrasser said...

I so loved Peeta. But then a preview for Twilight came on and now I am like Peeta Who???? That must be what Gale is doing for Catnip. Everytime she started to like Peeta, Gale would pop in her mind.

Jenny ESP said...

^please tell me that's not all you gize have to say

Markie23 said...

If The Grand Sophy gets picked does that mean I have to host next time?.... hmmm I vote for something else.

Memzy said...

Can I say how grateful I am for a main character girler who can actually kick butt and not need to be rescued all the time? I mean, she would have survived even without that loaf of bread and stuff. I have already had dreams about Cinna being my BFF. Cuz you all need to know that I secretly want a gay friend. I've asked for one for Christmas for the past two years.

I was also choking back the tears when her town did not clap as a rebellion. It became much more evident as the book went on just how well respected and RAD she was. If I accidentally get preggers and it is accidentally a girl I'm gonna name her Katniss Cinna Shederton. Fer realz.

What I wanna know is why must Suzanne Collins end it like THAT? I had NO IDEA that it was a series. Even until the book was winding down I didn't have a clue. Now I've gotta find something else to read (The Alchemist? Jenny?) while I wait the long months for the next one to come out.

sarastrasser said...

Gale could hunt, Peeta can't.

Edward woud destroy the Mutts, Peeta got his leg torn up.

Is that deep enough for you???

Memzy said...

It just took a few minutes to type you gize.

Krissy and Jason said...

i am here and i brought virtual refreshments...fresh burnt bread, in honor of Peeta of course. I know you can't see me but i also lit my hair on fire...in honor of Peeta of course!

Excellent review Landee, I completely agree and I loved it just as much!

Memzy said...

I am hoping that there is a love triangle between the three and Katniss ends up imprinting on Peeta. Oh wait...

Markie23 said...

Rabbit sounds more appetizing than squirrel Landee.

Landee said...

Imma put my questions at the end of my review. BRB.

Jenny ESP said...

I loved the no-nonsense writing, too. Every sentence moved the story forward. None of those long descriptions of taking a shower... I'm sorry what? Peeta in the shower?

I LOVED Peeta, if you can't tell. LOVERED HIM!

Would you gize go visit the arena for realz and see where Peeta and Katniss first kissed and buy "Team Peeta" shirts if this was real? Me too.

sarastrasser said...

With all the rabbit she was eating, she probably was sealing the deal constantly. That is why she didn't get as many sponsors. They were like "Wha?? Again???"

Memzy said...

If I were a stylist to the Almost Dead people, I'd have to have lots of surgery and cool medicine to get me through it. Plus, I'd curl in a ball at night and die a slow death. Every year.

I thought THG was very exciting and surprisingly mature for a YA book. Even though her style of writting - short sentences in the present tense (I go to the window. I open it. I feel the cool breeze) seemed a little "young readerish" sometimes.

Memzy said...

Telling about sealing the deal would have been the same as SM telling about Bella showering and brushing her hair. We all know it happens but we dont' need to read about how many bran muffins it took to get her there.

sarastrasser said...

I would totally visit the arena!!! But I would bring some prunes.

Landee said...

I turn to Markie. I say You Shut. I proceed to dream. Peeta is the star of my dream. I wake up sweaty.

sarastrasser said...

No memzy, I wanna hear about sealing the deal. Was it "S" shaped or deer pebbles. Probably the pebbles.

Jenny ESP said...

"The mentor thing was tragic," I say, snacking on one of Krissy's rice crispy treats.

Memzy said...

Oh for sure the pebbles. Doyee.

Markie23 said...

Too bad they couldn't have parachuted in some "Clean", and some "Heal". Maybe civilization had used all up by that time in the future.

Memzy said...

But I really liked Haymitch, even from the beginning when he was drunk.

sarastrasser said...

I am milking a goat for some cheese as we speak.

sarastrasser said...

I am sensing a great friendship forming between Kat and Hay.

Memzy said...

"I'll rip off your cape if you rip off mine", he says through gritted teeth.

^^ That's what Peeta said to me last night you gize......with his bedroom eyes.

Jenny ESP said...

There will totally be a love triangle thing between Katniss, Gale, and Peeta and S.Collins will try to trick us into falling in love with Gale, but I will remain faithful to Peeta. And my husband too, you gize.

Markie23 said...

When I learned this was the first book of a series I was worried that I'd be left hanging at the end; but I thought it was a complete story that stood on its own, and I wasn't disappointed in the ending. I am looking forward to the next one but I don't have to lose any sleep wondering who lived and who died in the contest or anything. I just hope the next book is not all about "oh, who do I love more, Peeta or Gale". I think it will be hard for her to top the story she told in the first book.

sarastrasser said...

You and Peeta can tear each others capes off all night because Gale and I were up at the crack of dawn hunting some squirrels.

quesetescapa said...

Agree with most of what you said- I do think what makes it a multi-level book is the idea that there is a love story going on in the background and the foreground of a whole greater political intrigue. I loved the story and hoped it would go in that direction but when the girl with the cutout tongue entered the scene I got super excited about the possibilities in that arena as well.

My prediction: Overthrow of the government through a 3 book series.

Jenny ESP said...

Yes, I have a tender spot for Haymitch. Member when he whispered the warning to Katniss at the end? I loved that part. They will be BFFs for sure.

sarastrasser said...

Uhhh I TOTALLY hope the next book is "who do I love more". I actually hope for a freezing scene where Peeta has to keep Kat warm in a tent and the ext morning there is a good kiss b/t Kat and Gale.

Memzy said...

^^She's so political like that. And I totally agree.

samandlysander said...

I loved Peeta! Katniss was pretty lame for not getting together with him in the end and I hated how it left me hanging.
I was hooked to the book from the beginning I literally could not stop reading it.
Those mutation things were really creepy. It made me sick that she saw Rue in one of them.
Oh and Rabbit definitely sounds better than squirrel Yuck!

Landee said...

First of all, so glad you got it read Sara! I miss you.

B, I predict eventually Haymitch is gonna save Kat's bacon. Not literally but, you know.

I may waver on the Peeta thing. After re-reading her descriptions of Gale at the beginning, I was like "Awww." I'll continue to dream of Peeta for the time being tho.

Memzy said...

I meant Queso of course you gize.

quesetescapa said...

PS Peeta is not the rip your cape off type, which is what makes him so likeable. He is the remember what small kitchen utensil you admired last time you were in WS type.

Cristin said...

Oh my gosh, I'm sooooo late!!! 31 comments in 22 minutes...you do the math!

Memzy said...

Landee's going Gale on us? That is soooo.....er.....Mockingjay-ish.

sarastrasser said...

Warm bread and butter sound so good right now. I wish district 11 would send me some.

Memzy said...

Good point Queso. He is the one that would remember your fave flower and bring it to you on a totally random day.

And then rip off his cape.

quesetescapa said...

Haymitch is my favorite character and I really liked him a lot when Kat started thinking about year after year watching his tributes lose. Yeah talk about deep character--one of the author's best tools is character development in my opinion.

But why start the book talking about cats and entrails?

Memzy said...

I thought we were all getting refreshments from the districts tonight. You gize didn't get your bag of coal?

samandlysander said...

WOW this is hard to keep up with. A kajillion comments got posted just while I was writing mine.

Landee said...

Don't make me parachute you some nightlock berries you gize. Gale is awesome (from what little I know about him). He made Kat happy which, now that I know her, is a hard thing to do indeed.

I was wondering the point of the Avox girl and then I realized more will come about her and her importance in other books, like Q said. She shows that there are people, even in the Capital, that don't like what's going on.

Jenny ESP said...

Yeah, I don't know how she will top the fast-pace of the first book. I thought the premise was so interesting, I had to keep reading. I'm sure the government will be going down, though. I hope future books are longer. Did this feel super short to anyone else?

I had SO many questions at the end, I was dying for more, so it did feel a tiny bit incomplete.

Where the H is Amy.

Markie23 said...

Katniss Everdeen - I like the name. I had a hard time picturing this character being only 16 years old. I think 18 would have been a better age (Peeta was 18 by the way) - I imagined her at 18 - a little stronger and more mature than a 16 year old. Plus I can start to imagine Katniss Everdeen - I like the name. I had a hard time picturing this character being only 16 years old. I think 18 would have been a better age (Peeta was 18 by the way) - I imagined her at 18 - a little stronger and more mature than a 16 year old. Plus Keira Knightley would be too old to play a 16 year old.

Memzy said...

No wonder Haymitch was a drunk. He couldn't take the loss you gize!

Markie23 said...

Oops, got a little crazy with the Paste button up there.

Krissy and Jason said...

Definitely Peeta over Gale. Gale's more the big brother type. And did Hay whisper that warning because it was really true or did he tell her that so she would keep being all lovey dovey for Peeta's sake?

I do have to say the book left me hangin' a little. And Kat's cluelessness about Peeta's feelings was a tad bothersome.

Landee said...

Oh my gosh, you gize! Q you are one deep mothah.

Cristin said...

So I was hooked form the first page and all the way through the 3 times I read the book. Landee...AMEN to everything you said...AMEN...

P.S. I love Peeta

Jenny ESP said...

L, what is up with your switcharoo? Have you been talking to Amy?

Memzy said...

Keira is actually a REALLY good pick for that character Markie. Well done. But who would play Peeta?

samandlysander said...

Yeah this book was way too short I was pretty depressed when it was over and had a whole month to kill with nothing to read.

sarastrasser said...

Kiera Knightly!!!??? Ewwwww gross. Also Kiera could totally play a 16 year old. She could play a 12 year old.

Markie23 said...

Peeta Mellark - nice guy - seems like the quiet sensitive type. Definitely not an Indiana Jones kinda guy. Indy would have taken her and kissed her hard before they got off the train. Instead he goes off and sulks.

quesetescapa said...

I like that she was 16 because it shows how fast she had to grow up.

Oh one annoying point--would people really be excited to watch kids die? Seems hard to comprehend. Except the careers--that is even more tragic.

Landee said...

She wasn't TOTALLY clueless. I mean, she wanted another kiss after that one kiss. And she didn't want to let go of him at the end. But she kept assuming Peeta was only playing the game like she was.

PULL it OUT.

::parachuting Q some whole grains for her deep thinking::

Jenny ESP said...

What, Markie?

Memzy said...

We are missing lots of people in this forum you gize. Do you think they already went to the arena with their "Team Peeta" shirts on?

Jenny ESP said...

What, Markiee?

Cristin said...

This book was waaaaaaaay to short for me...I need more...NEEEEEED!

Unlike heartless Markie, the book ended with a huge whole in my heart. I have to keep hugging myself to keep myself together...I hope I can hold out till the next one comes out.

Markie23 said...

Gale - wasn't in the book long enough for me to really care about him. I don't think the writer established a strong enough bond between them for me to feel like there would be a big conflict for Kat to choose between him and Peeta.

quesetescapa said...

We are missing people because tomorrow is halloween and some people haven't got the food ready for tomorrow's class party. For both of their kids probably. Or costumes. I don't know who would be so unprepared.

Memzy said...

Yeah, I started the book one day and was done the next day during a seal the deal. It isn't fair!

Landee said...

It's NOT a switcheroo... but he has some redeeming qualities, no? Srsly, I'm guessing you'll have some tough decisions to make in Book 2, that's all I'm sayin.

And yes, I can see those Capital farts liking watching kids die. Didn't you remember at the end when the style team was all talking to her about the games but it was all about what THEY were doing when things happened? Another social commentary if you ask me.

Cristin said...

I seriously need a team Peeta shirt...NEEEEEEEEEED!

sarastrasser said...

Kat kept remembering Gale through it all which helped me remember him and feel a little confused. I mean, Edward wasn't in this book and I kept feeling confused b/t Peeta and Edward.

quesetescapa said...

Oh and how could she not really notice Gale that way at age 16? Isn't that kinda unbelievable? Maybe when you are in survival mode you can't think like that.

samandlysander said...

I didn't really feel a romantic connect between Katniss and Gale. I think she and Peeta had more chemistry.

Memzy said...

Most of those capital people seem to be even less than human. More like robots.

Jenny ESP said...

Keira Knightly could play a 16 year old boy.

Wow, this is fast and furious you gize. I'm having a tough time keeping up.

Memzy said...

yeah, Q, but she was in survival mode with Peeta too and I felt the sparks fly off the page.

Hot Pants said...

Holy crap you gize! I had to finish survivor so Dwight wouldn't rip MY cape off. That took me forever to read all those comments. I don't even know where to begin. First of all, she didn't have to worry about sealing the deal because it was the future and they don't have colons in the future. It just ruins their vacations. Second, I think Gale just sounds muscular and warm, and Peeta seems a bit pudgy. Don't get me wrong, I totally loved Peeta, but I'm not actually in love with him yet. I meant to read it a second time to get in love with him cuz Jenny was getting pissed. But I got busy, saving lives.

Markie23 said...

The start of the contest was awesome. I love how they were locked in place for a minute to decide whether to grab something or run for it. I thought the whole contest was awesome. Horrible, but awesome. I just thought the writer had a great imagination and did a credible job of knocking everybody off. Having the already dead characters come back at the end as mutated werewolves was a stretch, but I had already completely suspended my disbelief at that point, and I just thought "cool"! I hope some Hollywood producer is thinking movie.

Landee said...

She's going back a changed person. Allz I'm saying is Book 2 is gonna rawk yer worlds.

Memzy said...

We're in the 80's with comments!

Memzy said...

You talk, Landee, like you communicate with S.C. or something.

Landee said...

The beautiful part was how it was all so contrived.... but you knew the Game Makers were doing it all so it was awesome. They would just happen to get exactly what they needed at just the right time. The rivers would dry up so they'd all have to meet at the lake, etc. Genius idea.

Landee said...

Oh, did I not tell you gize? Me & SCollins have been emailing eachother. She totally wants to know what I think she should do in book 2. I have this all on my Facebook.

Markie23 said...

I picture Peeta as a Sean Astin kinda guy. Sean is also too old to play the part, but someone with his personality. Nice and gentlemanly, and not afraid to cry, but strong enough when needed to get his friend Bilbo to Mordor.

sarastrasser said...

Gale is very manly. I think that it why I am having a hard time with Peeta is because he just laid in the mud all creepily with only his eyes showing. Gale would have fought Cato off and if he did get cut, he would scalp a squirrel, take the fur and stitched up his leg. Gale would definately have gotten a package from his sponsors for the injury. Maybe I am liking this Gale. Oh my gosh, I do Like Gale!!!

Hot Pants said...

I'm feeling car sick. Slow down.

Jenny ESP said...

I think S.Collins did a good job developing Gale and making the reader care about him, even though he wasn't in the book much. Member when he pulled Prim off Katniss at the beginning? Tearjerker.

But there was something special about Peeta. He wasn't the typical hero and I loved that. I loved that he was flawed. Yet he was willing and ready to die for Katniss. Sigh.

I also LOVED Katniss even though she was confused about Peeta/Gale. I think that made her a deeper character. I loved that she was strong and independent.

I loved Haymitch cuz he was a redeemable character.

samandlysander said...

The thought of Sean Astin as Peeta and Kiera Knightley as Katniss just makes me giggle. They would be quite a pair but Sean is def. too old.

Memzy said...

That was sad to watch happen.

Markie23 said...

I loved what a strong character Kat was. LOVE it when she shot the kid with her arrow before the werewolves could get to him.

Hot Pants said...

Me too Sara!!

Hot Pants said...

I just kept picturing Peeta as a pudgy little guy. I know I complained about Bellas wimpyness, but I prefer it coming from a girl. (Don't hit me Jenny)

Krissy and Jason said...

What about the baker being in love with Kat's mom? I started thinking that maybe the baker is really Kat's dad but then that would make Peeta and Kat bro and sis and then i had to stop my thought process because it started sounding to soap operaish. YIKES!!!

Hot Pants said...

I just remembered who Sean Astin was, and that is TOTALLY they type I pictured Peeta to look like. RUDY! RUDY!RUDY! (That's Sean Astin right?)

sarastrasser said...

Oh yes I totally love Kat. She wasn't all whiney and complainy and she totally took matters into her own hands. I loved that she saved Prim because I am kind of like Prim and I would totally expect my sisters to go in the arena for me if my name gets called.

Markie23 said...

I totally had a tracker jacker experience of my own in Guatemala you gize. We were on a P-Day hike - about 8 Elders and a couple sisters - to see a waterfall. Hiking in some dense forest on a steep and slippery slope, we passed beneath a wasps nest, and they went berserk. They were the biggest wasps I have ever seen with huge stingers that left enormous welts. We were running/sliding/tumbling down this hill and they just kept coming after us. They would dive bomb into our hair and either sting us on the head, or sting our hands as we tried to get them out. We were all stung multiple times and the stings left huge very painful welts that lasted a long time. Hallucinations you ask? Yeah, I saw pigs and chickens on the bus. Oh wait... no, that's normal in Guatemala.

Landee said...

"Because when he sings... even the birds stop to listen."

NaaNaaa Na naaaa

Hot Pants said...

I got your back Sara

Hot Pants said...

Yea Mark, your just like Peeta.

Jenny ESP said...

Who is Sean Austin?

I was glad that Katniss wasn't the damsel in distress, and she saved Peeta.

Amy--you were the one getting your panties in a bunch cuz you were out of the "I love Peeta club" so just stop. I could care less if you like him.

sarastrasser said...

Sean Asin is the gay hobbit from L.O.T.R who kept crying. I could picture him camoed in some mud with his shifty eyes appearing from no where.
Actually, I did like Peeta that is why I a conflicted.

Memzy said...

When I sang Naaaa Na Naa Na, you gize all stopped to listen.

Landee said...

Can you imagine Prim in the games? I mean, srsly. What is she gonna show the GameMakers? Her goat milking skillzz? C'mon. She would have gotten slaughtered at the Cornucopia you gize.

I wonder how this story would have been if Gale had been chosen rather than Peeta.

sarastrasser said...

I like manly men, no offense Markie.

samandlysander said...

Sean Astin - Mikey from The Goonies

sarastrasser said...

Oh snap!! No I din't

Memzy said...

I can't believe we are almost an hour into this convo.

samandlysander said...

I am just gonna say that I really didn't care for Gale.

Landee said...

I picture Peeta more like the Emmett type.

And Gale as the Edward type.

You know, to put it in YOUR terms.

Markie23 said...

Sean Astin is from Goonies you gize. How could you NOT know that? That's 80's trivia!!

Jenny ESP said...

If Gale was chosen, he probably would have taken out Katniss first. She was his biggest threat.

Hot Pants said...

I don't even wear panties Jenny. I love Peeta, just not like that. I love Dwight like that you gize, and it makes me sick to even think about anyone else. Except for Edward, and maybe Gale.

sarastrasser said...

If Gale was chosen, then it wouldn't have been as good. I love-love triangles.

Memzy said...

I love how Peeta was in love with her but not all gushy and "No you can't go into the Cornucopia because I am in love with you and want you to live."

Hot Pants said...

Gale loved little Katnip

Jenny ESP said...

And I already made the avatar for Peeta you gize. He looks like that. You are all TOTALLY ignoring the author's description of him. He was buff and strong, remember? Being strong (lifting and throwing stuff) was his skill.

Hot Pants said...

Peeta adored his Katnip

sarastrasser said...

Ahh Ah Ah Ahh <---singing like Gazelle from Enchanted and making all the bird stop and listen.

Markie23 said...

Yes, I freely admit I am the quiet sensitive type. But I'd totally gut Gale like a fish if he came between me and Keira... I mean Katniss.

Hot Pants said...

Now I just can't picture anyone other than Sean Astin as Peeta. You know, I used to think Tim looked like Sean Astin. Jenny is in love with her cousin you gize!!

Landee said...

AND he could frost a cake like nobody's bidness!

Hot Pants said...

Mark, you are the best of both worlds.

Jenny ESP said...

Just cuz Peeta was nice and the son of a bread maker, he is suddenly pudgy? Also, keep in mind that Peeta got his life-threatening wound when he saved Kat. It's not his fault it got infected and stuff.

sarastrasser said...

I pictured Peeta all hot and buff. Definately not Sean Astin and there was no Kiera in my imagination.
"Try wearing a corset" said with a major under bite.

Hot Pants said...

I love bakers, why don't I love Peeta? Why? What's wrong with me? I AM a cold hearted snake!!

samandlysander said...

The Peeta I pictured was pretty good looking and strong. Even so I don't think he could beat Edward in the looks department.

Memzy said...

Yeah, I NEVER thought of Peeta as weak or pudgy or anything. I thought of him as strong and hawt and just happens to not be starving and look like a Holocaust victim.

Hot Pants said...

Her under bite seriously bugs me.

Memzy said...

Take-a-take-a-nother-nother-look into her eyes and you will only see a rep-tile.

Hot Pants said...

I'm working on it you gize, but all I can see is Sean.

sarastrasser said...

Bread and squirrel would make anyone hot and buff. I like that they just had to eat stale, left over bread. Kat totally miss judged him. She is so judgemental.

Landee said...

I totally love Peeta too. ::twirling hair like Penelope on SNL:: I like totally said so in my review and stuff. He's gonna frost my cake later tonight.... and we're gonna throw big bags of flour around... and and and

Hot Pants said...

I really wish I hadn't clicked on the "email me all the comments" button.

sarastrasser said...

I so don't picture Sean as Peeta but maybe the guy who played Victor Krum on H.P. We should definately keep the old Harry Potter characters going.

Jenny ESP said...

What he looks like really doesn't matter to me. For reals.

BTW, I totally had a crush on several Hobbits from LOTR.

Sam, Shel & Co said...

Ok, this is probably off topic, as I just got on and have a Prop 8 conference call in 5 minutes....just got off the phone with Aunt Liz...haven't read the previous comments.

I LOVED this book. Vastly better than the S. Meyer books IMHO. I loved Kat's character, loved the social commentary. I wasted a day reading this and didn't feel like I wasted it, if ya know what I mean. (Unlike most of the Twilight books.)

Jenny ESP said...

^^Yay!

There is not a shred of doubt in my mind that Peeta will be the go-to-guy in the end. I like the overthrow the government possiblities. Can't wait for book 2!!

Landee said...

I agree... there wasn't a wasted word in the whole book.

sarastrasser said...

WHAT????!!!!! Edward makes everything worth while. As long as he is watching me sleep and humming my lullaby, everything is gonna be okay.

Memzy said...

Why isn't Liz in on this book club?

Hot Pants said...

I am guessing that in book 2 I will be in love with Peeta. Then you will all be like, "We loved him from page 1" and not think that i deserve him. So I will just stick with Dwight.

Hot Pants said...

Hold on a minute. I just saw I have 72 new emails. I'm just gonna go read them real quick.

Markie23 said...

Dwight Schrute?

Hot Pants said...

My husband Dwight. Slight difference.

Landee said...

Peeta totally sounded like Gty on page 303... when he was like "What was that you wre saying just before the food arrived? Something about me.. no competition.... best thing that ever happened to you..."

^^That's how Gty landed THIS, you gize. ::pointing at myself::

Jenny ESP said...

I am as much in love with this book as I am with Peeta you gize.

My prediction: Peeta will play a major part in overthrowing the government, something really self-sacrificing, that will make me cry. Amy will shrug.

Markie23 said...

We totally missed The Office gize!

Memzy said...

I think Markie has a crush on Dwight Schrute. But that's just me.

samandlysander said...

Yeah I'm trying to watch the office and read at the same time.

Memzy said...

"Look into her eyes......oh oh-ooo"

Jenny ESP said...

Do you think this discussion went well you gize? Was it too crazy and fast? I feel sick.

Markie23 said...

Oh, I SO love Dwight Schrute!!

Dwight: The eyes are the groin of the head.

Hot Pants said...

We need live talk and headphones. And probably code names too. A live chat room maybe? Or a weekend trip somewhere?

sarastrasser said...

Have you never heard of Tivo??

Landee said...

I'm crying just thinking about that Jenny. Thanks a lot.

Hot Pants said...

Your head maybe

Memzy said...

I also feel like I'm gonna throw up.....and dizzy.....

sarastrasser said...

"She's a loverboy at play, she don't play by rules, uh oh"

Jenny ESP said...

Oh crap my inbox...

Markie23 said...

It was pretty crazy and fast, and yeah I'm feeling a little car sick too. But I prefer having the discussion all in one place. I think this works well. I'll have to go back and digest it all a little more slowly tomorrow.

Landee said...

I think it wouldn't be so dizzying if people stayed ON TOPIC. I dunno.

Memzy said...

Yeah, thanks for rubbing that in. And I was just getting control of myself. I was out of the fetal position today you gize!

sarastrasser said...

I actually have never felt more alive. I guess I am more like Katniss and you gize are like Bella with your dizziness and motion sickness.

Hot Pants said...

167 comments! We are so popular!

Memzy said...

Who's been off topic?

"Girl don't play the foo-ool now."

samandlysander said...

Yeah it was crazy but I like it that we can all be at the same place same time so we don't miss out on anything.

Hot Pants said...

True dat

Jenny ESP said...

Yes, I might have more thoughts to add later. After some thought. And we should definitely outlaw any off-topic junk. ahem. Dwight shrewt(<--or however you spell it)

sarastrasser said...

LOL Memzy!! Na naanana

Landee said...

This Book Club thing is really taking off, Jenny. Congrats.

Hot Pants said...

It's less people than last time, but it's all the ones that like to have the last word in.

Hot Pants said...

Word

sarastrasser said...

It is cool if we go off topic cuz it is only 10 percnt serious.

Jenny ESP said...

LOL you gize.

Landee said...

S W U doubleV...

Memzy said...

K, I've got to go throw up. Maybe after dreaming of Peeta I'll be back tomorrow for more comments.

Markie23 said...

Fine, consider my hand slapped.

Hot Pants said...

again, WORD

Landee said...

Not you Markie! I love mission stories!

Jenny ESP said...

Yeah, thanks Landee for doing such an excellento job. ::pat on the back and sending you some burnt cinnabuns::

sarastrasser said...

You brought up a really good point Amy. How will this end cuz I don't wanna miss a thing.

Hot Pants said...

Missionary stories are awesome. Do you have many slides?

Markie23 said...

Yep, us Mountain Time peeps need to get to bed.

Memzy said...

Now she's talking Aerosmith?

Hot Pants said...

Let me have the last word then.

Jenny ESP said...

No Markie, consider your face slapped. (that's for comparing Katniss to Keira Knightly--gag)

Landee said...

Wait, are we done here?

Lamerz! Gty is outta town & stuff so yeah, I got nothin.

sarastrasser said...

You know what else I liked about Peeta is that he now has a bionicle leg. I wonder if it will make him super fast or be able to jump really high?

Memzy said...

I'm out.

::flanking it as I walk from the room::

Hot Pants said...

Markie let's us all talk about the guys you gize. Let him talk about his girl, who looks like a guy.

samandlysander said...

That was a pretty good review Landee if I say so myself. I'm pretty tired too so I'm gonna finish the office and go get some Z's.

sarastrasser said...

You got it right, Memzy. I didn't want to say it was Aresmith because I thought the Capitol people (aka Landee and Jenny) would cut off my typing fingers (a blogging avox) if I pointed out my Aerosmith reference.

Landee said...

Good point Sara. YOu know what I want? A freakin' Body Polish or w/e she called it. I want every flaw scrubbed away. I'd even like, kiss Peeta to get it too, you gize.

Landee said...
